I've watched a pair of Ravens engage in "the stick game" - one drops a stick or 
pine cone in flight, the other catches it then gains elevation and drops it to 
their partner, accompanied by lots of vocalizations. Probably has pair-bonding 
aspects but it sure looks like they enjoy it.

Likely a pen-raised bird that always fed from a dish or tray, removing the 
opportunity for the bill to be worn down normally.

As someone alluded to before, the bird was probably either an escape from a 
shooting preserve or a survivor from a dog-training session.

No, though I have usually accessed the preserve from the trail behind the bank. 
 The only people I run into there are DEC folks, dog walkers, and Rich Guthrie.

I have seen gray squirrels gnaw on a deer carcass, regularly eat suet, eat on 
road kill, and chew MacDonald's hamburgers taken out of a dumpster in Albany. 
Not that often, but some will do it. Maybe it relates to their level of hunger.

I always thought G Squirrels were vegetarians. Here are pictures of a squirrel 
on my deck eating a DE Junco. I could not believe my eyes but there it is.

I was working on my laptop this morning and heard a thump on the sliding glass 
door. Evidently it was a DE Junco that hit the glass. I finished what I was 
doing and went to see if the bird needed to be put in a box and kept warm until 
it recovered.
When I got to the door I saw the squirrel already had the birds head off and 
was eating the rest.

I have never seen this before, has anyone else?

I frequently throw out leftover wet cat food, fat and other table scraps that 
the Bluejays and Blackbirds enjoy but the squirrels always turn their noses up 
at that food.

She ate the whole bird and I spotted her later with only feathers stuck to her 
head and leg.

This is a first for me and I don't know if I like the idea of a carnivorous 
squirrel.

I just called the Gov. Office and left a message. I oppose this bill. The best 
solution for all is to trap feral cats and humanely euthanize them. I have had 
cats all my life, had experience with feral cats, and feel strongly about this. 
They are superb hunters, wild animals, and not the warm and fuzzy cats we have 
as pets.

Well, here's the latest on the Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) bill:
It was passed by both the State Assembly and the State Senate. Since the State 
Assembly had voted on this bill first, they get to decide when it gets sent to 
the Governor for signature and passage into law.
The State Assembly sent the bill to the Governor 2-days ago (October 14th). So 
the Governor has 10 days to either sign or veto the bill. If he does not sign 
it within that 10 days, the bill is automatically vetoed. 
The state legislative calendar is a strange animal. Ten days consists of each 
calendar day, except Sundays. So according to that formula, 10 days from the 
14th becomes October 26th.
Bottom line is that the dreaded TNR bill is NOT LAW - yet. 
So there is still time to act.
You might want to contact the Governor's office to let him know your opinion 
whether public funding of creating feral cat colonies in neighborhoods, parks, 
and sanctuaries is a good idea - or NOT. Refer to it by number to help the 
staff organize your comments: A2778/S1081
