[nysbirds-l] Ospreys
Three of the four osprey platforms have been occupied by pairs of birds at Sunken Meadow SP. I'm pretty sure that the fourth one will be occupied too. A note about the park: Hurricane Sandy had a devastating effect on Sunken Meadow SP. The land bridge spillway at the east end was completely washed away with the result that all of the water way up into the western marshes has become tidal and saline. The shores along the "creek" (or shall I now call it an estuary) are being dangerously eroded. The path along the south edge of the "creek" is closed. There are now extensive mudflats at low tide. I don't know whether this is a good thing or bad. I do know that there are fewer waterfowl and shorebirds being seen. I have not gotten to the marsh trail; but seeing all of the trees down, I imagine that the trail is in sorry state. The dump at the western end of parking field 2 is almost totally filled with woodchips. It is my understandiing that a footbridge is to be built across the old spillway. Hopefully, some things may return to normal; at least the ospreys are a good sign. -Norm Klein -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Returning to my car at Sunken Meadow field 3 I had a low flyover northern goshawk. It disappeared into the woody area between the parking lot and the boardwalk. This was yesterday at 3:30 pm.
