[nysbirds-l] Common Loon

2016-07-01 Thread Scott Rando
On the Delaware River just above Sparrowbush, NY a couple of days beck, I
saw a waterfowl far off that I didn't pay too much mind to. An imm. Eagle
made a halfhearted pass over this waterfowl and it called. It was the call of
a common loon. It dove, but surfaced again, and was able to identify it by
sight with binoculars. It seemed to be loitering in flat water 300 yds. or
so upstream of Cherry Island.

A silver colored one is USF (very hard to read) usually placed on the
other leg if state color band is present.

I sent similar the other day, but I didn't have the forum address, just
originator...apologies.

Color of the band?
Massachusetts and New York (among others) have leg-banded eagles. Ours are
blue...

There has been a ~4 year old bald eagle hanging around artists lake (middle
island) and patchogue lake for about a month. It has a metal leg band -
though no photos have been able to show what the band says.

Does anyone know who may have tagged a bald eagle that would be around here?

[nysbirds-l] Common Nighthawks, Sullivan Cty.

2013-08-31 Thread Scott Rando
I spotted about a half dozen common nighthawks at 7 pm tonight; they were
hawking for insects over Decker Rd in Glen Spey in Sullivan County. Winds
were calm and clouds broken to overcast.
