[nysbirds-l] Bronx Zoo Birdathon Highlights
We had 53 species total, with highlights being PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, LEAST SANDPIPER, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER. There were many Baltimore Orioles flying around and we even witnessed a nest being built near the Bison exhibit right over the path. [nysbirds-l] Red-Tailed Hawk Nest near Park Slope, Prospect Park
After viewing the Painted Bunting and Black-headed Gull on Wednesday, I walked to the west side of the park and up the hill there. On my way down the west side, I noticed some Blue Jays going berserk on a Red-tailed Hawk sitting in a tree. I noticed, upon closer inspection, that the Red-tailed Hawk was building a nest right next to the trail. Pretty exciting! HOWEVER, the Red-tail was using FISHING LINE from a (previously) unopened package to build the nest. I was told that there are people who will remove things like this from nests to prevent harm to young. Is this true? [nysbirds-l] Strange Snow Goose and Hermit Thrush, Stony Brook, Long Island
We've had a Snow Goose here at the Stony Brook Mill Pond since last fall. It appears very tame and tends to hang around with the Canada Geese. If you want a good photo of a Snow Goose, that's the place to go! Emma Olsen and I have also had a Hermit Thrush visiting our suet feeder for the past few weeks which I understand is quite unusual. He recently stopped appearing due to the major influx of Common Grackles.
