[nysbirds-l] Pomarine Jaeger - Nickerson Beach (Nassau County)

2020-05-30 Thread matt klein
There is a Pomarine Jaeger being seen east of the eastern tern colony at
Nickerson Beach. The bird appears to be in good overall shape (although I am
certainly no expect on Jaegers).

[nysbirds-l] GWFG at Roslyn Pond - NO

2019-01-22 Thread matt klein
I spent my lunch hour searching for the Greater White-Fronted Goose to no
avail. Most of the pond is frozen and the geese and mallards are mostly close
to the “dock.” While it was not found, it is possible that it is still among
the Canadas (and cackling?) and just overlooked. Good luck to those still
looking to see this bird.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Yellow-Billed Magpie in Great Neck today

2018-10-04 Thread matt klein
Folks I am getting reports that the original photo was from California. While
that is surely more plausible than the bird showing up well out of range, I
need to get more information from the original sighter. Needless to say that
this new information puts the original post’s veracity in doubt. Nonetheless, I
have called my friend who reported it and he is sticking by his story.

I just want everyone to know that I didn’t take reporting the bird lightly and
had a long conversation with my friend before reporting explaining how
implausible it would be to see this species here in NY. More to come.

My buddy, Dan Galimidi observed and photographed a yellow-billed magpie sitting
on a telephone wire in Great Neck today between 3 and 4 PM. A link to the
photo posted to Facebook is here.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156079055974401=gm.281339845836710=3

It would be extremely out of range if it was in fact a wild bird. The species
seems to only be found in a small area in California. Reporting it here to see
is anyone else has seen it or has any ideas how it would have gotten here.

Thanks!

[nysbirds-l] Yellow-Billed Magpie in Great Neck today

2018-10-03 Thread matt klein
My buddy, Dan Galimidi observed and photographed a yellow-billed magpie sitting
on a telephone wire in Great Neck today between 3 and 4 PM. A link to the
photo posted to Facebook is here.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156079055974401=gm.281339845836710=3

It would be extremely out of range if it was in fact a wild bird. The species
seems to only be found in a small area in California. Reporting it here to see
is anyone else has seen it or has any ideas how it would have gotten here.

Thanks!
Matt

[nysbirds-l] Peregrine Falcon at Udall’s Cove and Pond Park in Great Neck (Nassau)

2018-03-01 Thread matt klein
There has been a peregrine falcon seen and photographed in Udall’s Cove (at the
end of Laurel Drive) in Great Neck Estates this past weekend. A peregrine
(perhaps the same?) was again this morning flying over nearby Pond Park. While
people have recorded flyovers at this park and in the area before, there is
hope that perhaps the bird may be staying local this season.

While not rate, I thought people might like to know that there was a Wilson’s
snipe on the northern shore of the pond behind where the red-necked grebe was
being seen. The bird was found by a friend who was processing a picture of a
redhead taken at
the same pond. He saw the snipe in the background when working on the photo.

Long Island Sound this this morning was very calm.

Prospect Point is about a 3/4 mile walk west from the Sands Point Preserve. If
you plan on going there, my advice is to check the tides first. At high tide,
like this morning, you will not be able to walk past the first private homes
west of the preserve. The water will be anywhere from ankle deep to knee deep
on a regular high tide. You can tip-toe (like I did today) on top of the home’s
12-inch wide seawall but this is quite dangerous even though it’s only about a
six-foot drop into the water. (It’s also trespassing). I only carried
binoculars today, a scope would really be pushing your luck on top of this wall.

You can park in the lot in front of Hempstead House ( the western most castle
in the preserve) and make your way, by hook or by crook, down to the beach as
there are no longer any steps going down from the seawall. (storms keep washing
away the stairs).
The seawall in the preserve is much wider but it is in a deplorable condition;
very dangerous to walk on; stick to the beach unless you’re an idiot like me
who insists on proving to nobody that I can walk on top of it. :)

Also today, the now resident pair of Common Ravens were out and about around
the main parking lot in the preserve. I’m hoping that they pick a breeding spot
on top of the one of the castles or the water tower.

Cheers!!

[nysbirds-l] Tagged Great Egret

2016-05-08 Thread matt klein
Today I photographed a great egret in flight on the north shore of Long Island.
As I was reviewing the photos I noticed two yellow tags on the wings. It
appears to be "E13." Just wondering with whom/what organization I should share
this information.

Thanks,

Re: [nysbirds-l] feral cat bill

2015-06-11 Thread matt klein
I called my senator as well. The aide asked me a lot of questions about why I
opposed the bill. I was well versed having read the emails on this list. But I
think they either did not know about the bill or the issues with it. So it is
good to be prepared to educate your senator.

If anyone is interested there are five blue winged teals at Pond Park in Great

[nysbirds-l] Cassin's Kingbird - no

2014-12-06 Thread matt klein
Apparently it doesn't care for the rain. Did have a snow goose shining bright
among a flock of Canada geese.

[nysbirds-l] Great Neck Estates Pond Park and Environs

2014-10-26 Thread matt klein

It was a good day in Great Neck Estates Pond Park this morning. Lots and lots
of the usuals - white throated sparrows and juncos. Also in good numbers were
swamp sparrows and song sparrows as well as ruby crowned kinglets and
yellow-rumped warblers. I also had good numbers of hermit thrushes and a lone
carolina wren. Unusual for me were one Lincoln Sparrow (the first I have noted
in the area) and an Eastern Towhee (ditto). Most of the warblers and vireo
(which were still showing nicely until last week) seemed to have moved on but
it was an overall nice showing for a small local park on the north shore of
Long Island.

[nysbirds-l] Buffalo Birding in Winter

2013-12-25 Thread matt klein
Will be in Buffalo for the holidays and would like to finish my 2013 NY list
strong. Would appreciate good birding spot recommendations. Is Tifft (sp?) good
now for water fowl or is the water frozen over?

Happy Holidays,

Matt

Subject: Re: [nysbirds-l] [ebirdsnyc] Varied Thrush updates for Sunday?

I looked for the Varied Thrush from 1:20pm-2pm today (12/24/2013) by the Oval
Study at Stuyvesant without seeing the bird. Just got home. Two other
birders/photographers were there but they hadn't seen it either, at least by
the time I left.
