[nysbirds-l] Connecticut Warbler
Bob McGrath and I had a Connecticut Warbler at Hoyt Farm Park in Commack this morning. We discovered the bird in a patch of mugwort and goldenrod when it responded to a chip call and flew across the path. We got a clear look at the brownish hood, complete eye ring and yellowish underparts. The bird showed itself several more times in response to pishing providing what can be considered lengthy looks of 10 - 20 seconds before flitting off into the brush. Also at this location we found Yellowthroat, Tennessee, Magnolia, Black and White, Yellow-rumped, and Chestnut-sided warblers. [nysbirds-l] Yellow-headed blackbird
The Yellow- headed Blackbird continues along the western edge of Lewin's Farm in Calverton. I got a momentary look as the bird popped up in my scope view as I was scanning the flock and I could not relocate the bird after this brief encounter. The bird is mingling with a mixed flock of blackbirds numbering well over 2000 individuals. The flock was quite skittish this morning regularly moving from the trees to the ground, and when on the ground continually lifting and resettling making any kind of systematic scan impossible. I viewed the bird along the northwest border of the field on Sound Ave. Sent from my iPhone -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Ocean Pkwy and WE2
A late morning drive (11:30) down Ocean Pkwy to WE2 produced the following: Ocean Pkwy: 4 Rough-legged Hawks between Oak Beach and Tobay. All 4 were hovering and actively hunting. On the way back east a few hours later, they were not to be found. Coast Guard Station: A mixed flock of Snow Buntings and Horned Larks (about 50 of each) was feeding on the lawn to the east of the bathrooms. Among the group were 4 Lapland Longspurs. West End 2: I walked the median between the Coast Guard Station and WE2 and was unsuccessful in locating the previously reported Bohemian Waxwing. There was reasonable activity along the median made up of the usual cast of characters but during the hour long walk the only birds of note were 2 Merlins (1 male and 1 female). -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
