[nysbirds-l] American Avocets, American While Pelican ++ @JBWR (Queens County)...
A good day of birding at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens. As noted from my hurried posts from the field, the highlights were 3 breeding plumage American Avocets and an American White Pelican . I found one, then two then three Avocets feeding voraciously on the East Pond; at times they drifted away from each other, but for the most part stayed together. They were visible from the overlook accessible from Big John's Pond trail and seemed content to feed in that area. About an hour after that find, NPS Rangers, Julia Clebsch and Neena Mohammed spotted an American Pelican while on assignments over by the North Channel bridge and relayed the find to me. I hurried over and verified the find, but had some trouble posting from the field in that area, so my apologies for not getting that out as quickly I could. The bird was on the beach side from the North end of the East Pond and visible from the North Channel parking lot (East Side). It was still there when I left the area about an hour ago. Other good birds found today include: West Pond - Western Sandpiper (1), Pectoral Sandpiper (1) and 7 Stilt Sandpipers on the East Pond. I will have some photos later on my blog of the Pelican and Avocets. Good Birding!
