[nysbirds-l] Basherkill;Linear Park;Port Orange Road; Blue Chip Farm Birds (Sullivan,Orange, and Ulster Counties)
A visit to Basherkill yesterday morning yielded a modest 74 species. Early morning found the marsh blanketed in fog, with temperatures in the low forty's. Marsh birds either seen and/or heard included American Bittern, Virginia Rail, Common Moorhen, and Green Heron. Shorebirds included Solitary Sandpipers and Wilson's Snipe. The warbler total was fourteen species, with the more common species being represented. At Linear Park we finally found an Indigo Bunting, which seem to be MIA this Spring, as well as a Brewster's Warbler. An immature Bald Eagle landing on Route 209 in Wurtsboro to check out a roadkill was a surprise. At Port Orange Road we stopped at our customary location to listen for Acadian Flycatcher, and were treated to a Barred Owl flying out of a roadside Hemlock, flying to a nearby tree and letting us get a good look at him. Also present were Louisiana Waterthrush and Common Raven, but no Acadian Flycatcher or Golden-winged Warbler. We travelled up to Blue Chip Farm where a scan of the fields from the rise on the East side of Hoagerburg Road yielded a single Upland Sandpiper and three Bobolinks. Farm employees were mowing the fields as we were scanning which may have accounted for the low number of species observed. We proceeded to Shawangunk NWR but found it closed for restoration work - removal of the concrete runways.
