Right now, just south of Dead Man’s Cove, a Hudsonian Godwit is feeding among
Short-billed Dowitchers.

Bless up!

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit @Jamaica Bay East Pond Queens Co.

2021-10-02 Thread Andrew Baksh
Adult Hudsonian Godwit just now on the East Pond at the southend. Last seen
flying north.

My apologies to those of you who were put off by my use of the banding code for
Tropical Kingbird the other day. I am often doing the best that I can in cross
posting to various groups and the use of banding code is often used by me to
get a message out ASAP when in the field.

I’ll do my best to be mindful when posting to the list serves and try not to
forget to spell out the full name.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit, White-faced Ibis, JBWR now

2021-07-09 Thread Doug Gochfeld
There is currently an adult male Hudsonian Godwit along the east side of
the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens. It is just north of
the Raunt, and visible from the overlook at the end of the Big John’s Pond
trail.

There is also an adult White-faced Ibis (presumably the continuing bird)
that was initially at the south end of the pond, then in the same vicinity
as the godwit (presumably the same individual having relocated), and now
not currently in view from my vantage. A Gull-billed Tern is also foraging
around the pond.

I recommend knee-high rubber boots for anyone wanting to actually walk the
edge of the pond from either south or north ends, though they are not
necessary to view the pond from the south end or the Big John’s Pond trail.

Sora confirmed in dense planting's south of SE corner of Bryant Park lawn (rail
w short yellow bill). Very skulky. Briefly seen in amongst ferns adjacent to
taller white-flowering shrub. Best chance for view appears to be from south
side path looking north through rail (heh heh) posts. Will take patience...

There was also a small group of Snow Buntings, BB Plovers, Dunlin. A

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit at Wolfes Pond Park

2016-08-15 Thread Isaac Grant
Really sorry for the late post but I left my phone at home. Bird landed on the
beach in with a flock of BB Plovers and Ruddy Turnstones. Almost entirely in
winter plumaged. First alerted to its presence because it was calling which I
have never heard before. It stayed there for about 10 seconds and then flew
south towards New Jersey and the South Amboy area. Seen at 7:15 pm.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/40224645@N00/14972441879

bird flew in over our heads from the north about 150 yards from the Far
East end of the beach. We saw dark wing with white bar right away. Bird
landed on the low tide flats (Falling but almost low tide.) and foraged in
a tide pool for about two minutes. The bird then flew 50 yards to the south
west where it landed on a little exposed spit of land with green vegetation
near waters edge. During this flight we saw white rump and dark tail. After
about two minutes at this location bird flew toward breezy point. I don't
have much experience with this bird so not going to try to age or sex but
no red on belly.

This Godwit has spent the last 2.5 weeks in the New Jersey Meadowlands. It was
last seen this past Monday and was not seen Tuesday. Most likely the same bird
as it has an injured leg that sticks out to the side.

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit Continues on East Pond/JBWR (Queens Co.)

2011-07-25 Thread ken feustel
At approximately 11:25AM, while standing on the south end of the East Pond, our
cell phone rang. It was Andrew Baksh, who was at The Raunt (wooden docks) on
the East Pond just north of us. Andrew informed us that the previously reported
Hudsonian Godwit had just flown in. We were able to go get our scopes on the
bird, and enjoyed some distant views. We also had eleven Stilt Sandpipers, a
number in good breeding plumage, at the south end of the East Pond. A few
Pectoral Sandpipers were also around the East Pond. Water levels are very high
in the East Pond for this time of year, and we were told that the north end of
the East Pond is largely underwater. There were good numbers of shorebirds on
the West Pond, although nothing unusual.

We stopped at Massapequa Preserve before going to JBWR, and we observed three
juvenile members of the Least Bittern family. Also of interest was a Forster's
Tern (seen all season on the Pittsburgh Ave. pond) feeding a recently fledged
juvenile (rudimentary flying skills).

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit Orange County, Sat-Sun

2010-04-12 Thread Shaibal Mitra
A breeding-plumaged Hudsonian Godwit was found at the Wallkill River NWR,
Orange Co. on Saturday evening by members of the Mearns Bird Club, including
Dennis Murphy.

It was found again on Sunday morning by Tom Burke, Gail Benson, and Andy
Guthrie.

The bird fed along a muddy berm trending north-south within the impoundment
immediately south of the parking area on Oil City Rd. It was visible from the
dikes along the east and west edges of this impoundment, but views were very
distant from the east side and compromised by poor light from the west side. An
early Spotted Sandpiper was also present in this impoundment.

Late in the morning, the godwit was joined by three Lesser and one Greater
Yellowlegs. They all crouched low as a Peregrine flew up from the south, then
flushed when it returned a few minutes later. In flight, its black underwing
coverts and black and white tail pattern left no doubt about its identity, but
unfortunately the group continued flying southward, out of sight into New
Jersey.

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit at Pike's Beach (Suffolk Co.)

2009-08-23 Thread Ken Feustel
After birding on Dune Road late this afternoon we stopped at Pike's
Beach before heading home. Among the usual shorebirds on the west bar
at Pike's at 5:45PM was a moulting adult Hudsonian Godwit. We observed
the bird for about ten minutes when it flew off to the East.
Subsequent attempts to relocate the bird were unsuccessful.
