[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach and Jamaica Bay- 8/29/09

2009-08-29 Thread Brent Bomkamp
Stella Miller, Brendan Fogarty and I birded Jones Beach (Nassau Co.) and the
Jamaica Bay East Pond (Queens Co.) in the rain today. There was a large
flock of terns on the outer side of the Boat Basin Island. Within it were
two Black Terns and two Black Skimmers. A Green Heron was feeding nearby,
something I have never seen at Jones before. In front of the WE Field 2
building was a large flock of gulls which contained at least two Lesser
Black-backed Gulls. Two more Black Terns flew over the swale as well.

At Jamaica Bay on the East Pond the two American Avocets continued as
reported previously. Also present were at least six Red Knots and two
Pectoral Sandpipers.
