Just heard a Northern Shrike is being seen somewhere in the farm fields between

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike/Pine Siskins/Snow Geese & more

2015-10-24 Thread Joan Collins
10/24/15 Sabattis Circle Road, & Shaw Pond, Long Lake (Hamilton Co.)

Late morning, I drove Sabattis Circle Road, and stopped at Shaw Pond on my
way home. Some of the species found:

Wood Duck - Shaw Pond

Amer. Black Duck - inlet of Round Lake

Ring-necked Duck - over 60 on Shaw Pond

Hooded Merganser - inlet of Round Lake

Wild Turkey

Pied-billed Grebe - Shaw Pond

*Northern Shrike - inlet of Little Tupper Lake (first of the season)

Gray Jay - 4 at Sabattis Bog; the birds are now divided into a solo jay and
a group of 3. The group of 3 Gray Jays are very aggressive toward the solo
bird.

Blue Jay - still many around

Common Raven

Amer. Robin - still many around

*American Tree Sparrow

Chipping Sparrow

Song Sparrow

White-throated Sparrow

White-crowned Sparrow

Dark-eyed Junco

Purple Finch

Pine Siskin - large flock of ~ 40 to 50 birds at Sabattis Bog

Amer. Goldfinch

10/19/15 Malone (Franklin Co.)

I traveled to Rotary Lake in the Malone Memorial Recreation Park this past
Monday. Thousands of Snow Geese feed in the area fields during the day and
after sunset, they descend on Rotary Lake for the night. It is a remarkable
annual spectacle that can be observed during Oct. and Nov. with numbers
peaking by late October - early November (with prior year estimates of 4,000
Snow Geese completely covering the lake). I arrived in mid-afternoon to
check the lake, and was surprised to find over 1,000 Snow Geese, and even
more Canada Geese covering the lake! I photographed them for over an hour,
and then they all headed east (likely to the nearby Salmon River). A couple
hours later, just after sunset, wave after wave of geese flocks descended
onto the lake for over 45 minutes. It is a visual and auditory experience
that is hard to put into words. I posted a few photos to my Facebook page
and there are more photos in my blog published on the Malone site:
http://www.visitmalone.com/blog/2015/10/snow-geese-spectacle . (Photos
include dark morph and intermediate birds also.) On the drive up, I
observed Bufflehead, and Hooded and Common Mergansers along the causeway at
Tupper Lake. I also observed 4 different Common Loons on lakes along the
drive.

10/18/15 Long Lake

We had an Eastern Phoebe in our backyard. Kathy Schneider reported a late
Ruby-throated Hummingbird at her camp in Newcomb. She took her feeder down,
and an hour later, spotted the hummingbird where the feeder had been!

The previously reported Northern Shrike was seen east of the Teddy Roosevelt
Nature Center at about 12:00PM today. The bird was close to the roadway where
you exit West End and head east toward the Ocean Parkway. Otherwise it was
fairly quiet. On a related bird note, this morning Sue Feustel had an
Orange-crowned Warbler on the bike path between Fields 6 & 7 feeding in the
goldenrod bordering the path. i have posted on my flickr site a distant photo
of the Sea Cliff Guillemot.

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike

2013-11-30 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
Sorry for the late post. The Northern Shrike was seen late this morning
(11:00am) flying out of the tall trees west of the west end ll parking lot.
It continued north into some bayberry bushes for a while then flew north
again toward the fishing pier. It then tried to nab a yellow-rumped warbler
in flight, was unsuccessful and continued in flight east towards the coast
guard station. Other observers were Ed Becher and Douglas Futuyma.

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike in Warwick, NY

2013-11-17 Thread Pat Palladino
For those interested, apparently there has been a Northern Shrike hanging
around for just over a week in the last 200-300 yards of low trees and shrubs
between Lower Wisner Road and Upper Wisner Road where those two roads meet at
Wisner Road in Warwick, NY. Today, I had a business meeting (yes, I am talking
about a meeting on Sunday) about 20 minutes from that location, so I decided to
swing by and take a look in the afternoon. After about a half hour, while
standing on Upper Wisner Road, I located the bird in the bushes between the two
roads about 250 yards from where those roads meet. Actually, what first got my
attention was its confrontation with an angry Mockingbird.

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike

2013-11-08 Thread Robert A. Proniewych
The previously reported N. Shrike contines at West End II, Jones Beach
State Park. The was originally spotted today in the trees and bushes at the
nw corner of the parking lot. It flew across the road into the dunes and
constantly changed position until it was relocated in tall trees near the
parking lot. It then flew parallel to the parking lot's north end in an
easterly direction where it was then lost to view. Observed for 20-25
minutes with Ed Becher, David Klauber and myself Robert Proniewych.

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike at Heckscher S.P.

2012-10-27 Thread Derek Rogers
Despite some decent search efforts by several birders, including myself, the
shrike was not relocated. I stopped searching somewhere around 3:30 PM.

The word is that the bird took flight heading west and was last seen near Field
7. Search parties canvassed scrub areas near Fields 6,7 & 8 but unfortunately
came out shrikeless. Hopefully the bird turns up again.

Best,
Derek Rogers

Re: [nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike at Floyd Bennett Field

2012-03-08 Thread Terence Clarke
Today around 8:30am Guy Tudor and I watched the Northern Shrike for
about 10 minutes near the same area where Martin Carney saw the bird on
the 2nd (last Friday). The bird was perched in a tall tree
(Cottonwood?). At one point it swooped down to the center of the
airstrip where it pried a centipede from a seam in the concrete, it then
flew back to it's original perch and devoured the bug.
Best,
Terry Clarke

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike/Floyd Bennett-YES

2012-01-06 Thread Shane Blodgett
Got a short glimpse of the long-staying (but often difficult to locate)
NORTHERN SHRIKE at Floyd Bennett today. It was sitting at the top of one of the
taller trees in the middle of the wooded portion of the NW most field.

The shrike has been there for a little over a month now, with the first
sighting being John Gluth's on Dec. 4.

There were also 5 RED-NECKED GREBES in Jamaica Bay south of the boat launch
parking lot.

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike

2011-12-20 Thread Tim Dunn
After seeing Sy and Joe at the channel at Floyd Bennett Field, I took the road
that leads north from the campground to the end, (northeastern portion of the
area) where another birder whose name I did not get pointed out the Northern
Shrike and I managed a brief but good look as it perched on a snag. Safe to say
the bird is still around, but moving about this area quite a bit.

Thanks,
Tim Dunn

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike + Marbled Godwit @ Floyd Bennett Field Kings County...

2011-12-16 Thread Andrew Baksh
Just got off the phone with Jean Loscalzo who relayed a message from Corey
Finger who is at Floyd Bennett with Shawn Bilerman. Shawn and Corey found
a couple of good birds at FBF in a Northern Shrike and Marbled Godwit.
Despite the poor cell phone connection, I could make out that location for
the Shrike appeared to be the Eastern runway that heads toward the outflow
and the Godwit is at the outflow. This outflow area I believe is also
known as the "boat ramp?"

Good luck if you go!

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike - Sullivan County

2011-12-14 Thread flybynight9
This morning on my way to work I spotted a immature Northern Shrike on Route 42
just before the pipeline clearing in Forestburg. This bird is very brown with
no white in the wings while perched, and a very vague mask. This location is
approximately a mile or so before the Orange County border. You can reach this
location off Route 17 by taking either Exit 104 or 105 (Monticello exits) and
follow the signs for Route 42. If anybody would like to contact me concerning
the location feel free to email me.

[nysbirds-l] Northern Shrike at Cedar Beach (Town of Babylon/Suffolk Co.)

2011-12-06 Thread ken feustel
At approx. 10:30AM this morning I briefly observed a Northern Shrike perched up
on a Red Cedar tree on the north side of the Ocean Parkway west of the entrance
to the Cedar Beach Marina. The bird dropped down below the shrub line and was
not seen again. My first Common Goldeneye of the fall, a female, was at Gilgo
Marina. On the home front, we have had our second Orange-crowned Warbler in the
yard this fall, a drab bird observed this morning. A week and half earlier we
had a colorful individual in our backyard. These observations are notable in
that, in the thirty-seven years we have lived in our home, we have never seen
an OCW in our yard. This is turning out to be an interesting late fall
migration.

Had a Northern Shrike near the first boat launch just South of Lazy Point in
Napeague. Initially mostly feeding from perches near the boat launch but also
chased a Snow Bunting along the shore line at one point.
