[nysbirds-l] Raven flying above Selden
I spotted, or should I say initially heard, a lone raven flying west over the parking lot of the Selden Library. His unmistakable call and spade-shaped tail gave me a huge smile. He was in stark contrast vocally and visually to the handful of crows which were also seen a few minutes later in the same area. My corvid-loving daughters are thrilled about this :) Happy birding everyone! -Raina -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

This morning before heading to HLSP, I did a quick walk through of Valley Stream. A single Raven flew over carrying sticks in its beak. It was being harassed by two crows. [nysbirds-l] raven nests
Went to look for the raven nest on the bank building crevice on Main in New Rochelle today that John reported the other day. Found the nest but no birds. It's in an unusual place for a ravens nest but it sure appears to be one albeit a small cramped one. Will check this week on a nicer day for the inhabitants. Also went to check for the nest in Co-Op City with no luck. Saw no sign of a nest anywhere. I hope I was in the right place, just didn't see any sign of a water tower. Oh well. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Raven/Osprey Nesting in Westchester County
As I was driving down Main St in the City of New Rochelle yesterday, a Raven swooped down onto the street briefly, from a retail building that fronts the street. As I passed the building, I saw that the Raven flew off of a large sticknest in the upper left corner of the building's massive architectual features. the building appears to be a now defunct bank. This location is at the corner of Main St and LeCount Pl, which is directly next to the location where Ravens have been reported soaring over buildings, for quite some time now. What I find to be even more interesting frankly, is that while driving from work yesterday on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Mamaroneck (Exit 23), I glanced at the top of a cell transmission tower that dominates the landscape there, only to find another (very) large sticknest, this time with an Osprey in attendance ! I do not know how many active Osprey nests are now established in Westchester County, but I cannot imagine that it is more than a small handful. Possibly the same one that was reported in nearby Amityville yesterday. The bird vocalized several times to confirm its identity. The bird left after a few minutes and flew southwest with crows in chase. [nysbirds-l] Raven - Jericho, Nassau County
Thanks to a call from Kevin O'Leary I was able to finally connect with a Raven in Nassau County around 2 PM. It was on a water tower on Jericho Turnpike just southeast of the intersection with routes 106/107 on a water tower. It had been in the area including office buildings on the north side of Jericho Turnpike for about 30 minutes. It flew off to the southeast. No more fruitless trips to the Roslyn water tower -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Raven again and lots of red at my feeders
Just as I was leaving work today at 3:55pm one of the ravens flew over low calling and then circled the Trump Plaza and headed south. I'm thinking more and more my ravens are definately the Co-op City ravens. A coworker lives there and has always wanted to see bald eagles and ravens so I told him to look up when he's at home and he might see the pair. Also had lot's of red at my feeders last evening, 12 cardinals. I've had about 12 in the yard for the last few years but this is the first time I've actually seen that many at the feeders together, quite nice. Andrew Andrew v. F. [nysbirds-l] Raven, Black-headed Gulls - Niagara River in Buffalo/Tonawanda, Erie Co.
Thanks to Willie D'Anna's call in the afternoon, myself, Dave Gordon and eventually Bill Watson collectively got to see the 2 adult breeding pluamged Black-headed Gulls and 3 Little Gulls at the Harry's Harbor Place docks along the Niagara River in Buffalo. Not long after the first Black-headed Gull flew downriver, a second bird showed up on the docks very near where the first individual was loafing/resting. As Willie previously mentioned, this bird has darker bare parts than the first, most notable on the legs, which were reddish-black from the tibia down to the feet. Likewise the bill was very blackish with just hints of dark red coloration. For directions to Harry's Harbor Place, please see Willie's directions pasted below. Back at the Huntley Plant in Tonawanda, one of the Common Ravens was observed flying in over River Rd. from the NE carrying something in its bill (food/nesting material?), after which it eventually landed on top of the north end of the power plant. At this time it was getting intensely harassed by a pair of crows and eventually flew up out of sight into the rafters between the smoke stack and building itself. A few photos from today are here: www.flickr.com/photos/jmpawli10 Jim Pawlicki DIRECTIONS TO THE BLACK-HEADED GULLS LOCATION: Harry’s Harbour Place Grille, which is accessed from Niagara Street (NY 266), just south of Ontario St. – look for the small “Harry’s” sign with an arrow. The access road will take you under I-190 to a marina with many docks, where the small gulls are sitting. The Black-headeds seemed to prefer to sit on the docks that were closer to Harry’s restaurant. Other places to look include the foot of Austin Street and the foot of Hertel Ave, both just south of Harry’s.Between Ontario St and the access road to Harry’s is another road that will take you just north of Harry’s. where you can drive a short distance along the river. There are many Bonaparte’s Gulls in all of these areas, although they will likely be moving out in the next few days. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Raven at Jones Beach
Is there anywhere still worth reporting Common Raven from? Maybe the outer beach is the final frontier. There was one at Jones Beach this morning. Seen from the nature center parking lot (West End 1), it landed in the one obvious dead tree to the east. After displacing an Osprey in the tree, it was displaced by two American Crows. I got a couple of pictures off before the raven took off, showing the size difference between the two Corvids. It flew off to the northeast, I thought to the east end of the park police grounds. [nysbirds-l] Raven nest in Queens
I returned to the nest site today and witnessed one bird sitting on the nest until the second flew in making an interesting croaking noise. The bird on the nest took off before the second bird landed. The second bird landed next to the nest, hopped up on the edge of the nest, and dipped its head into the nest and moved it around a bit. If I had to guess I would say it was turning eggs but I couldn't see for sure what it was doing. It then settled down on the nest and didn't budge for the fifteen minutes I remained. Re: [nysbirds-l] Raven nest in Queens
This talk of Ravens is very interesting - After the last snowstorm I went out to shovel snow (here in Bayville) and heard a very unusual crow (diff from any other crow I've heard 'round here). I did think to myself - that it was really odd & sort of raven-y. I wasn't able to really persue it - 10" of snow...shoveling... stuff like that, but now you have me thinking... Now I'll have to pay more attention. [nysbirds-l] Raven nest in Queens
Johnny Lawrenson, a Kew Gardens naturalist, mentioned that Common Ravens were regular in his neighborhood and had nested last year. He provided the exact location and I went and checked it out today, and, sure enough, within seconds of arrival, a Common Raven flew over vocalizing and a second raven flew in to and sat on a nest. The first bird disappeared but the second bird stayed on the nest for the ten minutes that me, my partner Daisy, and our infant son Desmond stuck around. So far as I know this is a first breeding record for Long Island/New York City/Kingbird Region 10 (the BBA shows none south of Westchester). I don't think it would be wise to give the exact location of a nest, especially of such a rare breeder for the region. I was so skeptical of the initial report (sorry Johnny!) that I did not bring my camera and digiscoping rig with me today but I will certainly be heading back over tomorrow to get pictures (and I will be monitoring the nest to see if it succeeds).
