[nysbirds-l] Red Phalarope, Purple Sandpipers - Niagara Falls, Ont.

2013-11-30 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
A RED PHALAROPE was very cooperative today near the Canadian shore of the
Niagara River in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was very near the shore with
the sunken barge in the background. You sometimes had to walk right up to
the railing and look down to see the bird. From the same spot, one could
look at the rocks at the base of the small waterfall to your right and see
two PURPLE SANDPIPERS.

It was very slim pickins for the gulls, exceptionally few today. I expect
they will be back tomorrow with the dumps closed. There was a juvenal
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE below the falls and another in Buffalo, opposite the
Lark Sparrow spot in Fort Erie (Central Ave. and Niagara Parkway). The LARK
SPARROW was seen today. A LITTLE GULL was seen in Lewiston/Queenston,
downriver from the Queenston boat ramp. Also in the area was a BLACK
VULTURE. An adult PEREGRINE FALCON was sitting on the Robert Moses power
dam, seen several times today. We did not see it go after any gulls today,
though we did see it catch a BONAPARTE'S GULL on Thanksgiving day.

Good birding!

Willie
