[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern Nickerson Beach

2024-05-24 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Patricia Lindsay reports that she and others just observed a breeding-plumaged
Sandwich Tern at Nickerson Beach, Nassau County. The bird landed briefly and
then flew off, but people are continuing to watch the loafing flocks.

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern on Staten Island, ++

2023-07-04 Thread Anthony Ciancimino
Good evening all,

Apologies for the delay on this forum, but this morning, Steve & Josette Bonamo
found a Sandwich Tern off of the coast of Conference House Park on Staten
Island’s south shore. The bird frequents a series of breakwaters off of the
beach for roosting, and was routinely returning to these breakwaters after
foraging bouts throughout the morning and into the early afternoon before heavy
rain moved in.

As a side note, there has also been a substantial number of Brown Pelicans that
have been utilizing these breakwaters for roosting as well.

For those interested, this area can be accessed at the following pin:

https://maps.apple.com/?ll=40.496322,-74.247146=My%20Location&_ext=EiYpgAgWLHo/REAxZutt93uQUsA5Vx2Dbt5AREBBrk2+NCCPUsBQAw%3D%3D=m

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern @ Nickerson Beach

2014-07-08 Thread Andrew Baksh
Brendan Fogarty just called to report a Sandwich Tern he observed and
photographed at Nickerson Beach near the Tern Colony.

Unfortunately, the bird was flushed by someone on the beach and was last
seen heading towards Jones Inlet.

Folks in the vicinity might want to check known Tern loafing areas and
please report negative or positive results.

Good luck if you go and many thanks to Brendan for the report.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern - NO, Nickerson Beach (Nassau Co.) 7/10 evening

2013-07-10 Thread Brendan Fogarty
A quick clarification thanks to a helpful response, because I failed to
introduce COTE as the 4-letter code for Common Tern. There are hundreds of
Common Tern that nest in the main skimmer colony. The Sandwich Tern was with
them when it was first seen.

Hi all,

After appearing at 12:10, the Sandwich Tern was seen in the area for the next
50 minutes or so. It was last seen by myself and Pat Palladino flying out of a
large flock of COTE over the water, although it had done this earlier and
returned. A survey of the area with Menachem Goldstein and his mother (great
meeting you guys!) around 5:00 showed no Sandwich Tern, although a Roseate Tern
with a red bill base sitting with the same group of terns was nice. Menachem
had mentioned getting brief looks at a large tern at Jones Beach just a little
earlier. I hadn't heard of any recent Royal Tern sightings in the area, so it
may well have been the Sandwich. Another check of the skimmer colony around
6:00 PM revealed no unusual birds.

3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (all starting their 2nd cycle) were on the beach
amongst the regulars. Also there was a gull that seemed to be a tiny Great
Black-backed. Photos of this bird and some other gulls from the flock can be
seen here:

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern at Nickerson Beach

2013-07-10 Thread Benjamin Van Doren
Hi All,

Brendan Fogarty reports a SANDWICH TERN in front of the skimmer colony at
Nickerson Beach. He says there is a lot of vehicle traffic so it may not
stick, but as of a minute ago is still on the beach and is obviously in the
area.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern Cupsogue

2013-06-23 Thread Gail Benson
Yesterday afternoon on the rising tide at Cupsogue CP an adult breeding
plumaged Sandwich Tern visited the flats for 20 minutes until all the birds
flushed, the tern not returning. Shai Mitra later found a first-year Arctic

of Corey's Shearwaters early and Manx Shearwater off Cupsogue very late in
the day. Gail Benson and Tom Burke

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern - Jones Beach 7/24

2012-07-24 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,

In the fading evening light I just barely noticed a tern flying west along the
West End 2 shore. It was a bit bigger than the many Common Terns in the area
with a white forehead, trace of a black crest (not a Forster's type postaucular
spot), plain gray back (unlike the young terns in the area), and short forked
tail. I was unable to see the bill well as the bird was already leaving fast
when I got on it, but it wasn't especially large (more evidence against Royal,
Caspian, or a seafaring Gull-billed?!). It wasn't the best sighting, but I am
feeling fairly strong about it being a Sandwich.

In other news out there, there was a large, homogeneous group of Great
Black-backed Gulls (101, exact count) loafing on the beach. Barn Swallows are
also gathering already in the WE2 parking lot and along the shoreline. The
swale is primed for shorebirds, but today only had 2 (surely local) Killdeer,
and single flyover Lesser Yellowlegs and Black-bellied Plover. Lots of young
Piping Plovers and Least Terns around too!

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern - Cupsogue County Park

2012-07-06 Thread Shawn Billerman
Hi all,

This afternoon, Mary Beth Billerman and I headed to the Cupsogue flats to
see what was around. Shorebird numbers were much higher than they were on
Sunday, with good numbers of Short-billed Dowitchers and Semipalmated
Sandpipers, as well as a couple of Western Willets with the Eastern. The
highlight was undoubtedly the basic plumage SANDWICH TERN that briefly
landed among the loafing tern flock around 3:40 PM. It stuck around for
only about 10 minutes before it disappeared without us seeing it take off.
Also around were 6 ROSEATE TERNS.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern, Mecox, July 3rd

2011-07-03 Thread Donna Schulman
There were at least 5 terns at Mecox Inlet this morning, the highlight being
a *Sandwich Tern *offering premium photo ops close to shore. There were
also two large terns, possibly the Caspian Terns that had been sighted there
in April? I will post photos tonight. The foreheads are "dusky", unlike
white Royal Tern foreheads. But the bill is more red-orange than red.

Rounding out the Tern count were Least, Common, And Forsters. Also two
Black Skimmers.

[Note: Mecox Inlet is Southampton Town permit parking throughout the
summer. It's not clear from the signs or the town web site if you can park
there before 9am or after 5pm, as you used to be able to.]

[nysbirds-l] Sandwich Tern at Cupsogue

2011-06-29 Thread Seth Ausubel
This afternoon near low tide, a Sandwich Tern was on the flats. It was an adult
in nearly full breeding plumage, enjoyed by Shai Mitra, Pat Lindsay, myself,
and a birder to be named later. I guess one good tern deserves another.

Back to the Arctic Terns: They were still there when we left (just now). The
second bird mentioned in my previous post was actually in advanced 1st summer
plumage with a fairly complete black cap and dark red legs.
