[nysbirds-l] Sunken Meadow State Park- Least terns, Gray-cheeked Thrush

2010-05-09 Thread Vinny Pellegrino
I spent the majority of my morning birding in Sunken Meadow State Park.  5
Least terns and 21 Laughing Gulls were out fishing on the LI Sound viewed from
the boardwalk near Field One.  I spent most of my time walking the Inner Marsh
trail, just past the entrance to Field 2 on the left hand side of park road,
and got some really spectacular views of warblers, vireos, and thrushes
foraging low in the understory because the winds were rather strong in the
upper canopy. The highlights from this morning are below.

Yellow-billed Cuckoo- 2
Ruby-throated Hummingbird- female on nest
Great-crested Flycatcher- 1
Tree, Barn, and Bank Swallows
Marsh Wren- FOS, 2 singing
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers- 4
Gray-cheeked Thrush- FOS, 1 gorgeous view foraging in leaf litter, spent ten
minutes just watching this uncommon thrush
Swainson's Thrush- FOS, 1 just past the Gray-cheeked on trail
Wood Thrush- 5
White-eyed, Blue-headed, Red-eyed, and Warling Vireos
Blue-winged warbler- 3
Northern Parula- many very low in understory
Yellow warblers- abundant
Chestnut-sided warbler- 1 excellent view of male
Magnolia warbler- 1
Black-throated Green warbler- several very low
Prairie warbler- 4
Blackpoll warbler- 2
Black-and-white warbler- 7
American Redstart- 4
Ovenbird- 2
Northern Waterthrush- 1
Common Yellowthroat- abundant
Scarlet Tanager- 1 male foraging in low-lying shrubs
Baltimore Orioles- 3
