Re: [nysbirds-l] White Ibis - Staten Island - NOT SEEN
Thanks for relaying the news (though negative). I'm sure there have been plenty of subscribers waiting anxiously for an update. White Ibis has a reputation for staying at a site for a short period before moving on. For example, the immature sighted and beautifully photographed at Piermont (Rockland Co.) in Aug 2008 was there for only a few hours, much to the chagrin on many NYC birders who have failed to connect with this species in the state. Of course, the question now is where has the Staten Island bird gone? Hopefully people will check the Mount Loretto area on the corresponding tide this afternoon/evening in case it performs an encore. Plenty of suitable habitat around the edges of New York Harbor both on the New York and New Jersey sides to satisfy this species. Jamaica Bay and the Meadowlands marsh complexes would be obvious places to look, with so many Glossy Ibis and other herons, but by the same token the bird could wander over a greater distance quite quickly. The juvenile White Ibis that visited Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area in Niagara Co in the fall of 2009 was (to my knowledge) only spotted at the roost site, so obviously ibis have the potential to vanish from sight quite easily. This bird is an adult which may help.
