[nysbirds-l] Wodd Duck in "love" with a Mallard female duck
A Wood Duck has been seen trying to court a Mallard female duck at Central Park. It has been spotted in different places in the park (the Resevoir and some of the ponds). This week it seems to be located at The Pond (Central Park south and 59th Street). Monday, I spent about one hour at the Pond observing how this male Wood Duck defended its “territory” while keeping the Mallard female duck close to him. During the time I spent observing the Wood Duck’s behavior it never left the female Mallard alone. I am not an expert on duck behavior, but I got the impression that the female Mallard was not "rejecting" the Wood Duck. This is a picture of both ducks in their strange romance. http://www.pbase.com/image/121808418 -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
