Sat. and Sun. there were two Red-necked Grebes at the south end of Guy
Lombardo Ave. by thefishing pier. The one at Jones Beach State park could
be one of them.

Of course, it's a RED-NECKED GREBE. I was going to blame it on coming in
from the cold and typing on the phone (which I hate). But since the error
occurred twice (subject line and text) and "L" is nowhere near "R" on the
keyboard, I suspect it must be "auto correct" at work. Can we get software
designers that know something about birds?

 

Anyway, I went back in the early afternoon to take advantage of better
lighting. The glebe, I mean grebe, was by the first dock at the Coast Guard
station, around green buoy 7 (is that in for repairs or something?). After a
while, it swam out toward the outer sea wall. I do get the feeling it could
hang around a while. Very reminiscent of the one at Captree last year. That
one was very inactive much of the time, leading some to speculate that it
was ill. Seeing another one doing much of the same makes we wonder if that's
just normal behavior for Red-necked Grebes.  While I did get close pictures
today, I'm not real happy with them. As I'm due for a web site update and I
was set on putting up a grebe, I have a picture that I am happy with.

running into Rough-legged Hawk. The closest I got to that was Gary showing
me his picture from yesterday. I stopped off at Cedar Beach Marina while the
lot was temporarily open. Looking out and off to the west, I saw two falcons
flying westward - a large dark one repeatedly diving at a larger, grayer
looking one. Make of that what you will.

At Shinnecock Inlet this morning, the large number of gulls included 2
(perhaps 3) immature Iceland Gulls and almost certainly 2 Glaucous Gulls.
Three male Boat-tailed Grackles were on Dune Road at the Ponquogue Bridge
access, displaying a little to each other.  A Snowy Owl was in the marsh
west of the bridge, near the edge of the bay.  West of Docker's Restaurant,
the Black-crowned Night Heron was conspicuous, but I failed to find an
American Bittern.

The Black Vulture was atop the chimney of a house almost opposite the church
on Sound Avenue at Church Lane. No birds of note were present at the buffalo
farm on Roanoke Avenue when I stopped there. Further west, a scan of EpCal
from several points yielded nothing. On Long Island Sound, viewed from Park
Road and Hulse Landing Road, only expected species were seen.  A Merlin and
two Northern harriers were along Hulse Landing Road.
