[OSGeo Oceania] Open Mapping Hub Asia Pacific - Request to share Call for Partners for OSM Hackfest 2023

2022-11-30 Thread Jonah Sullivan
Forwarded From Risham Habib

Hi,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Open Mapping Hub - Asia Pacific. We
have a call for partners for OSM Hackfest 2023 that we would like to share
with your member list. We are planning on organizing the first ever OSM

Re: [OSGeo Oceania] SSSI / SIBA-GITA merger

2022-11-22 Thread Jonah Sullivan
I've heard news about this and it seems redundant: two of the three
organisations already merged (SIBA|GITA) and the two remaining have been
collaborating on most initiatives anyway.

This merger does reduce the breadth of ideas and initiatives, however it
concentrates efforts.

Hopefully there is a renewed interest and motivation to engage with our
profession.

[OSGeo Oceania] VACANCY: Catchment Rehydration Selection Tool

2022-05-04 Thread Jonah Sullivan
*Interesting opportunity with a mate of mine. He's looking for some help
with geospatial Python work. Remote work is available. Pay is negotiable.
Let me know if you want to see the longer version of the Project Briefing
(6 pages). Contact is l...@themullooninstitute.org
.*

*Regards,*
*Jonah Sullivan*

*Project Briefing*
The Mulloon Institute (TMI) has entered a contractual partnership with NSW
DPI Agriculture for the development of a Catchment Rehydration Selection
Tool. Funded as part of the DPI’s Climate Smart Pilots Project,
Demonstrating Adaptation Program, the selection tool will be designed to
evaluate catchment scale regions across NSW for the feasibility of
implementing landscape rehydration practices which have been successfully
demonstrated by TMI at the Mulloon Creek catchment, Bungendore, NSW, and
other catchments around Australia.

Direct benefits arising from implementing landscape rehydration practices
are the improved utilisation of water resources - slowing stream flow
velocity, increasing groundwater/aquifer recharge, increasing the degree
and duration of soil water content and improving biological diversity in
the riparian and flood zones. Subsequent indirect benefits, particularly
when combined with other regenerative and sustainable farm practices, have
positive impact at the farm and regional level - improvement in soil
health, enterprise productivity, ecological diversity and resilience in the
face of drought, floods and bushfires.

The Catchment Rehydration Selection Tool will provide a spatial output akin
to a ‘heat map’ which grades agricultural regions of NSW according to their
potential for effective adoption of landscape rehydration practices. The
enormous breadth of benefits from rehydration means several players will
have an interest in use of the Selection Tool. Stakeholders are likely to
include, but not be limited to:
• farmers and farm advisors,
• catchment communities,
• government agencies with interests aligned with Sustainable Development
Goals,
• investors seeking to achieve scale for aggregation in environmental
credits programs,
• regulators,
• insurers in the evaluation of risk, and
• LGA’s for evaluation of water access and quality.

Widespread adoption of the catchment rehydration approach will require the
Selection Tool to meaningfully account for the risk and return profile
associated with deployment of the new practices. Therefore, the model
development phase will draw on requisite expertise to establish a
methodology for assessing the potential effectiveness of rehydration.

[OSGeo Oceania] FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2022 - Conference Format

2021-11-25 Thread Jonah Sullivan
Congratulations to the Conference Organising Committee on another
successful event a couple of weeks ago. There were about 250 people that
attended in-person hubs and another 50 online viewers, a great success!

It's time to start thinking about next year's event: *what sort of event
should we have?*

There are a few familiar delivery modes (there are definitely more modes
than these):

   - *Online Event* - a webinar or teleconference that is entirely virtual
with people joining from wherever they are. Presentations are streamed
   individually or concurrently.
   - *Online with In-person Hubs:* this is the mode that was used in 2020
and 2021, the keynote presentations are streamed to local in-person hubs or
viewing parties as well as anyone online. The in-person hubs also have the
opportunity to showcase presentations by local attendees. Some hubs may
provide a video stream of their content.
   - *In-person Event with In-person Hubs:* a main in-person hub where
speakers are before a real audience. Hubs or viewing parties or individuals
can join the video stream from wherever they are.
   - *In-person Event:* a big ol' fashioned conference in one central
location. Individuals can join the video stream from wherever they are.

Any preferences or ideas? Anything missing? Any guiding principles?

I'm leaning towards the latter two with a big in-person event but it isn't
up to me: the OSGeo Oceania Board serves the FOSS4G and OSM communities in
Oceania so tell us what you think.

Thanks for your continued engagement,
Jonah Sullivan

[OSGeo Oceania] FOSS4G SotM Oceania Survey - What We Want

2021-03-31 Thread Jonah Sullivan

FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2021
The Free Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) and State of the Map
(SotM) communities have a unique opportunity to come together to meet each
other and share our thoughts and new developments.

OSGeo Oceania would like to hear from the community to help make this
year's conference something everyone wants to be a part of.

This year the 2021 conference committee has the opportunity to have:

   - an in-person conference (like FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2019
   );
   - an online-only conference (like FOSS4G:UK
   );
   - a mix of the two (like the Locate Conference
   ).

questions).

[OSGeo Oceania] FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2021 Conference Committee

2021-03-11 Thread Jonah Sullivan
There were a couple of community meetings recently to discuss what to do
with the FOSS4G SotM Oceania Conference this year (meeting notes from 2020
03 12

and 2020 03 05
).
The meetings were attended by people from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and
Samoa.

The group considered options for the conference format using an online poll:

   - online only (teleconference like FOSS4G UK 2020
   )
   - in-person only (pre-covid conference like FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2019
   )
   - hubs (many watch parties or hubs like FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2020
   )
   - Hub and Spoke (central hub with watch parties like Locate21
   )

There was a strong preference for a "Hub and Spoke" model with both keynote
speakers as well as technical presentations.

A Hub and Spoke model is where there is a Central Hub where people can meet
in-person for a normal pre-covid conference, but there are also spokes or
satellite hubs where people can join with people from their city or region
to watch the streaming content from the central hub (or a person could
watch from their own device from wherever they choose). Most people thought
they would be able to attend a satellite hub, and about half thought they
would be able to attend a central hub.

The group endorsed the action to request OSGeo Oceania to "Call for
Proposals" for a hub and spoke conference. I'll forward this action to the
OSGeo Oceania board.

Re: [OSGeo Oceania] OSGeo Oceania February board minutes

2021-02-22 Thread Jonah Sullivan
Thanks for bringing this up.

The good mojo fund and the microgrants initiative are easy to confuse.

The good mojo fund is a specific pool of money used to enable participation
by underrepresented sections of our community. It is enduring in its
current form.

The microgrants initiative is a new fund and a new funding mechanism to
facilitate grass roots events.

The purpose and function are similar, but they're seperate.

In these minutes the references to "good mojo" should be replaced with
"microgrants".

Re: [OSGeo Oceania] [FOSS4G-Oceania] POTENTIAL AUS WIDE SPONSORSHIP FROM ESK GIS & MAPPING

2020-09-25 Thread Jonah Sullivan
This is great news. I had assumed that the economic downturn and reduced
funding requirements would mean sponsorship wouldn't be an issue, but it
definitely is.

I'll bring it up to the local organising committee at their meeting this
week.

We'll need to define funding levels with defined benefits.

This could be confusing with hubs also seeking sponsorship for venues and
other costs, so careful communication and coordination will be required.

Re: [OSGeo Oceania] [FOSS4G-Oceania] Good Mojo funds

2020-09-22 Thread Jonah Sullivan
Thanks for bringing this up John.

I agree, the Good Mojo fund is meant to make the conference more accessible
and more representative of our region.

In the past two years 20 people were enabled to attend the conference and
side-events:
In 2019 ,
13 people
In 2018 , 7
people

The Good Mojo program is related to the OSGeo Travel Grant Program
, which has
similar aims: "to facilitate accessibility and diversity at our global and
regional FOSS4G events".

I think these traditions should continue, and I'm sure our parent
organisation (OSGeo) would endorse this position as well.

I request the OSGeo Oceania board to consider how to use Good Mojo funds to
support this event and the broader community.

Thanks for taking the time to think about this Ed. I think being inclusive
is a great idea, but I don't see much benefit of having a large but
disengaged member pool.

I haven't put any thought into charging membership dues, not sure if it
would be worth the administrative hassle since the organisation is based
around the conference.

to meet our needs and community expectations.
