[Ohrrpgce] Opening URLs and documents

2020-05-29 Thread Ralph Versteegen
I totally forgot, but weren't we planning to add a script command to let
people open URLs in a web browser? To be used for sending someone to your
website. Of course, it should show a prompt (with a little dead-time to
prevent misclicks) asking the player to confirm. Didn't we already agree to
this? It would be easy to add since we already have a portable
open_document function.

...for that matter, we could let people open other files distributed with
their game too, most likely .txt, .pdf and .html files. I suppose we should
have a prompt for opening .html files if there's one for opening URLs, and
maybe a whitelist or blacklist of file extensions (disallow
.exe/.bat/.sh... must be a lot more dangerous ones), but don't need a
prompt for opening text documents, audio files, video, or images.

I remember we talked about it. I can't remember the details. Was somebody
actually asking for it?

I understand it is theoretically useful, but it also makes me a little
nervous.

Yes, kylekrack just now, and RMZ has requested it in the past, "especially
on Android". The problem is that you can't include a ReadMe on Android, so
there's no way to send people to your website except to tell them to thumb
in a URL, very impractical. (However, our open_document function wouldn't
work on Android.)

GLOW: itd be great for redirecting players to the forums and stuff
kylekrack: I was thinking for a credits page, to link to people's social
media, or websites, or whatever

Okay, that's easily enough demand, and a confirmation screen is adequate
safety. I'm in favor. :)
