I've added the VDG to CC by mistake while I was reviewing some other VDG
related bugs of okular, but I couldn't remove it.

[Okular-devel] [okular] [Bug 358061] New: [Usability] Improved/consistent mechanism to add/modify inline note

2016-01-16 Thread Simone Gaiarin via KDE Bugzilla
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=358061

Bug ID: 358061
   Summary: [Usability] Improved/consistent mechanism to
add/modify inline note
   Product: okular
   Version: 0.24.0
  Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: okular-devel@kde.org
  Reporter: simg...@gmail.com

Currently the text of the inline note is not entered inline, but a qt message
box to input the text appears. In this way we cannot have a live preview of how
the note will look like.

Moreover when we edit the inline note and we double click onit, it's opened as
a popup note for editing (but the first time we entered it we need to do it via
a different popup dialog box).

In my opinion the inline note should be both inserted and modified inline (if
technically possible) or at least it should have a consistent way for inserting
and modifying it in order to create less confusion to the user and have a
better appearance.

Reproducible: Always

The size of the icon of the popup note is in my opinion too big, so that
sometimes it's difficult to position it in the document without covering part
of the text.

If the size would be configurable, everyone can adapt it to their own needs.

I would prefer something like this for popup notes: An icon is displayed when
the note is collapses. When the icon is clicked the popup appears on the side
of the document with an arrow-like line pointing to the point where the icon
was before (the icon disappears when the popup is open).

I've attached some pictures of other document viewers implementation of the
popup note to better explain the idea.

This should be assigned to the visual design group in order to have a proper
visual design of this feature. Is it possible to flag this bug as VisualDesign?

One can select one annotation tool in a sticky way (so that it is not
deactivated after the first use) by double clicking on the annotation tool
icon. This is an hidden feature that is not intuitive to use. At least a
tooltip should suggest this possibility (I think it's a suboptimal solution
tough) or maybe the feature can be exposed in a more clever way.

In browse mode the pointer has a shape of a hand and not of an arrow. This may
makes sense since it simulates the action of grabbing the sheet but I think
that even with a shape of an arrow there wouldn't be any usability problems.

The reason I suggest to have it as an arrow is the following:

Some popup notes (probably produced in Adobe) are rendered in okular as very
small triangles, so that to open the popup note a super high mouse pointing
precision is required. The "browse mode" pointer has a shape of a hand (and not
an arrow) so that it's even more difficult to hit the correct point to open the
popup note since it's not clear which is the "active" point of the cursor.

The shape of the polygon (an ellipse for example) is not previewed (only a
rectangle is shown but this doesn't help a lot), so that it's pretty difficult
to draw it where we want without covering the surrounding text.

This together with the fact that polygons as other annotations are not
resizeable makes it difficult to use some of the shapes.

Would be useful to be able to resize an inline note.

Sometimes we need to position the inline note among other parts of text in the
document. If the choice we first decide is not correct and cover other text,
currently the only solution is to remove the note and recreate it while would
be enough to resize it.

A feature I really miss in Okular is the abilty to add text inline with a
transparent background in order to be able to fill static form fields.

One can tweak the inline note to display a white background but a frame will be
displayed around the text. Moreover since the inline note is not rescalable,
it's difficult to match the font required to fill the fields without going
above the surrounding text.

Either a new tool should be created (preferred way) or the inline note should
be adjustable in order to allow transparent background and no border and
possibly the ability to add text inline.

A good example is the text input tool of xournal.

The point we click to add a popup notes is assumed to be the upper left corner
of the icon that will be added. I would expect that the point I click is
considered the central point of the icon. With the current behaviour the icon
is often placed over the text. See attachment.

Of course we can then move the icon, but with this fix usability will be
improved.

Another use case is inserting a scanned signature as an image to sign forms. As
I've reported in related bugs the annotations should be also rescalable so that
the barcodes, signatures or whatever can be correctly placed.

Search feedback in google drive

Another improvement to distinguish between search matches and highlighted text
may be to add a search feedback with a pulsed background color on the text or
similar.

An example is google document search feedback (see attachment).
