Three or four speed ? If you have a floor shift Muncie tranny , you might try Fleetpride , sometimes known as Associated Truck . [old-chevy-truck] Transmission/Clutch House in San Francisco
I was wondering if anyone knew of a reputable clutch/transmission mechanic in the San Francisco metropolitan area. I had an unfortunate clutch/transmission problem today and don't have the space or tools to work on it at the moment. The symptoms were that I began to smell clutch and transmission fluid smells in the cab, the truck started shuttering, and jumping out of gear, and then shortly thereafter the truck game out of gear, the transmission locked up, and there was a lot of smoke in the cab that smelled of transmission fluid. I had to have it towed on dollys as the rear end wasn't free even out of gear with the break off. Any ideas? Also, I had some fun when then tow truck driver was parking it in my neighborhood on a hill. I got in to set the parking break, and the truck jumped off the tow truck while on the dollys in the back. Suddenly I had no rear brakes and the truck was rolling free backward down the hill. Fortunately I turned the wheel to steer into the street while the tow truck operator ran along side, I stomped on the front brakes and he managed to release the rear dolly so the rear wheels hit the pavement. Wow, was that fun. We almost took out an SUV parked behind me about 30 feet. The tow truck driver was my buddy after that. I saved him a big insurance claim by steering into the street. Bob ; You're making it sound more and more like a 1960's vintage replacement engine ~ they made 235's up to 1964 for replacements that I know of and possibly later . Re: [old-chevy-truck] Re: Engine Identification
You may find that the rattle can approach will cost you a lot more than a modest paint job at a body shop. These trucks present a pretty big surface area and one spray can probably only covers a small area. And they may or not be batch controlled. And I think they are extremely unfriendly to the environment. And you run the risk of developing an RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) in the joints of your fingers trying to keep that little button pressed down for hours and hours. Orthopedic surgeons specializing in the hand charge more than Maaco or even Earl Scheib! And those little plastic nozzles clog up like crazy! That was fun Got anything else you want an unsolicited opinion on? jt On Nov 12, 2006, at 12:33 PM, REM Wilson WY wrote: > Nate, almost anything will outlast me! [old-chevy-truck] Re: Another source for 261 engines
"Though last placed in larger Chevrolet trucks almost 40 years ago, this now scarce engine can still be located and often at a price no higher than for the smaller 235. Many still remain in the original Chevrolet trucks and are now setting in salvage yards or behind farm buildings. In Canada, the big Pontiac cars are sometimes in the back rows of more isolated older wrecking yards. Don't overlook the wrecked and badly rusted Chevrolet cars of the 1940's and 1950's, particularly those showing signs of some past exterior customizing changes. [old-chevy-truck] Re: carb Fuel Supply Test
Disconnect fuel pipe at carby , remove ignition key and crank engine ~ you should get pulsating 4" squirts of gasoline out the top end of the tube , if so ,you'r carby has a stuck float or flaot valve etc. If no fuel sprays out the tube , stopand go backand test the siphon of fuel _to_ the fuel pump , there should be a stream of fuel out the pump inlet pipe as big around as the hole in it , if it dribbles , there's a kink in the tube or more likely , crap in the fuel tank pulgging up the outlet ~ it canbe removed and cleaned . If you CATCH FIRE , you skipped leaving the key out in the previous step , be careful when working with gasoline . I take it you have a 216 with the original Carter W-1 carby then ? . -Nate Bill wrote: > > i have a 1953 chevy truck am restoring, rebuilt the carb still have to keep pumping the gas to keep it runing, new gas pump, every thing is geting gas but the carb. its a carter carb, any info please > > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] > Ole Chevy and GMC trucks rule! [old-chevy-truck] Re: Rusty Old Truck
.Or is that supposed to be ' Rusty's Old Truck ' ? =8-) . Anway , water ?! YIKES ! . So . Your truck is a 6 volt negative ground electrical system and it's dead simple and prolly the best vehicle to learn on 'cause it's simple and you're oh so lucky to be in The South where floks know that BBQ sauce is _NOT_ ketchup dangit! .(here in La-La Land there seems to be some confusion about this simple fact . You'll need a simple basic test light and the Zip cord off an old TV set or summat like that , add a couple alligaotr clips to the ends and you're ready to begin . Best bet is to sort out the brakes then change all the flauids then fo a major tune up , by this point you'll be able to drive it and so can more enjoy it as you chase down the lights and fuel gauge . BTW : none of the dipwad rubbie jerkoffs 'round here would know a KnuckleHead if I hit them on the head with one PanHeads , esp. the later ones with external oiling are better anyway =8-) . (I know , Knuck's are _soo_ sweet , I had one) -Nate Rusty wrote: > > Thanks Nate! > > The type vessels I'm currently on are involved in Deepwater > Construction/Repairs. [old-chevy-truck] Re: Engine Identification
Well ; It has a 261 low compression cylinder head on it so you're either got a 261 or a 235 with a 261 head on it . either way , you've got a good engine that'll outlast you if you take care of it . If the oil gauge and filter fitting on the left side of the cylinder block are 3/4" (may have brass bushings to bring them down to 1/8") , you've likely got a 261 on your hands . Do you need the tune up specs and etc. ? they're all listed right here in the archives if you do the search . Sounds to me like you've worked hard to save ' just another old truck ' back to a cool vintage vehicle that's not only fun to drive but ready to work , too ! . -Nate Bob wrote: > > I need some help with my engine Identification. I have been working for over two years on my 1952 3600/5W, working from the back bumper to the front. Removed Ford rear axle, replaced broken front springs, new shocks and complete new brakes and lines. (feel it is more important to stop than to go). Rebuilt the bed and milled new floor boards. I have finally arrived at the engine. My truck has turned out to be a "Heinz 57" varieties. > > Here is all the information I can get from the head and block. RE: [old-chevy-truck] Engine Identification
The block casting number is not located in any one particular place on all these stovebolts. Its been my experience so far though that the number is always located on the sides of the block. Sometimes large and sometimes smaller digits. It has a bad habit of collecting grunge making it hard to see without some scraping around. Assuming that the date code is in fact I 24, your block was cast on Sept. 4, 1954. It is possible for that date to be 1944 also but probably unlikely. If you run across the casting number let us know. Jeff Ole Chevy and GMC trucks rule! To unsubscribe, send an email (with no subject, no body, just the email), to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo!
