[old-chevy-truck] cool Luke woody

2007-04-11 Thread winchester54947
I saw the final sequence of the 1967 Paul Newman movie and after he is
shot he's loaded into the back door of the prison warden's vehicle I
want one too. The red Chevy has the hood, emblem, grill, front fenders
and headlites of the 48-54 trucks, but looks like a 4 door station
wagon, not a Suburban? Is this the infamous Sedan Delivery?. What's the
chance of finding one or is this a one of a kind Hollywood creation
with gleaming polished wood sides? "I think what we have here is a
failure to communicate". Larry

[old-chevy-truck] Re: 235 Power steering Pump

2007-04-11 Thread vwnate1

Janice ! 1/2" is _WAAAYYY_ too much toe in ! unsafe in fact as it'll
make the truck ' twitchy ' @ speed .

1/16" to 1/8" MAX and I like the 1/16" better .

Spend your time getting all the play out of the front end then grease
the Bejeebers out of it (heat recalcitrant Zerk fittings) untill
there's _no_ resistance when you turn the wheels with the tires off
the ground - takes some time but is well worth the effort .

If you disconnect the drag link , you can use a fishing scale to set
the steering box's worm gear bearing pre-load to about 10 INCH pounds
pull...

I am certain you know by now that the steering box ONLY uses OIL and
never , _EVER_ grease although it might have a big Zerk fitting in
the filler plug ~ if you've allready added grease , not to worry ~
remove the filler plug and insert a funnel , pour in gear oil or if
it leaks really badly , STP typ gooey " Motor Honey " oil .

Caster shims are little wedge shaped things that fit between the
front axle and the springs , they go in from _behind_ and you may be
missing them as many fall out & get lost by careless mechanics in
years gone by ~ easy to install and make a _BIG_ differance in return
to center when you're driving ~ when you come barreling 'round a 90°
street corner @ 35 MPH , you should be able to let go the steering
wheel as you begin to accellerate out of the corner and the sterring
wheel should become a blur as it rapidly unwinds back to center ~ if
it doesn't , or if you have to manually unwind it after a turning
manoever , your front end isn't right yet .

Keep up the good work ! .

P235 75R15's, then the tech fellow at Jim Carter's said then the toe
in has to be adjusted to 1/8" instead of around 1/2". He also said I
should make sure I have the proper shims on the front end to allow
the proper caster. Finally an old mechanic guy I just met told me
that I might have to "tip the axle a bit with shims". I am not sure
what that means, maybe the same shims as for the caster.

[old-chevy-truck] Re: Tired arms when parking

2007-04-11 Thread vwnate1

Real D rater )or better) TRUCK tires will require 50 PSI or so and
will reduce steering effort greatly...

I'm using Dayton LT D rated truck radials and I love'em ~ no
appreciable wear in over 40,000 miles of commercial service yet .

About $125.00 / Ea. in most tires shops .

YES! 1/2" is way too much. The stock specs call for 1/16" to 3/16" of toe in
for 1/2 and 3/4 ton models (early 50s). I have tall, skinny radials on stock
16" wheels and I set the toe at 1/16". Drives like a dream up to 80 mph.
