[old-chevy-truck] Shift Linkage Problem

2008-01-06 Thread Kent S. Butler
I just got the new side cover installed on the '56 3-speed tranny. I got the
shift linkage hooked up, everything adjusted correctly in the neutral position.
Then this is where the problem comes in.

The 2nd/3rd shift rod is hitting the clutch fork and will not allow it to shift
into gear. The clutch pedal is adjusted correctly for free play and thus there
is not enough clearance for the shift rod.

Am I doing something wrong or do I just need to bend the shift rod to give me
the clearance that I need?? Wanted to ask for advice/suggestions before I make
the problem worse.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Kent Butler

[old-chevy-truck] Head Gasket

2008-01-06 Thread Antonio Tijerino
Hello and Happy New Year to all,

I just noticed that the engine in my truck might have a leaky head gasket.
Just have a few questions for the members of the list:

How difficult is it to replace?

What is the best replacement material to use when purchasing a replacement
head gasket?

Do I need to use some sort of gasket sealer or permatex material on both
sides of the gasket.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Antonio

Bear with me here Antonio. You mention that you just noticed the gasket
leaking??? Can you elaborate on that? Typically, a cylinder head gasket causes
other woes aside from a visible leak although it can happen.

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Head Gasket

2008-01-06 Thread Antonio Tijerino
Jeff,

Thanks for your reply; I am glad you want a more detailed explanation. I
have been working on this truck for almost 10 year now and I can't wait to
see it on the road. A few months ago I was able to start the engine and it
starts, runs and sounds beautifully. With the Christmas vacation and other
holidays the truck has been sitting since I started the engine. I came back
from Xmas vacation a couple of days ago and went into the garage and noticed
a large puddle of what it looks like a mix of antifreeze with a few droplets
of oil. I tracked the source of the leak and it looks like is coming from
the matting surface of the head and block around the cylinder number 6. I
have not tried to restart the engine since I noticed that puddle and my
first conclusion was the head gasket. I am tempted to remove the manifolds
since the leak is right under and it would be difficult to see exactly
without removing them.

Do you think it could be something other than the head gasket?

Thanks,

Antonio

[old-chevy-truck] Fender turn signal lights

2008-01-06 Thread dazysnow
I have come to a change in my thinking about these. Once I disdained
their use in favor of park light turnsignals on AD trucks. These days
I see so many big rigs as I sit here at the Flying J composing this
mesage, and I see you can get LED lights and lenses and they actually
are a good safety feature which can be used along with the park light
signals. I don't want just any, though. I have two 2 tons, and I see
they both had guide lights, but I want the wide kind, preferably with
visors. So what is the name of what I'm looking for? It bolted on the
front fenders as aftermarket turn signals, it was about 4" or so in
diameter and the mounting cyllinder was about 4 inches or so thick.
Who made this type of signal, are there any numbers or anything I could
use to do a search on that auction site that sounds like repay? Has
anyone gotten ahold of some and tried to upgrade to LED?

Re: [old-chevy-truck] Head Gasket

2008-01-06 Thread Jeffrey Pohlar
Antonio, just be sure to confirm the leak source before disassembling anything.
Clean the suspect area and try to inspect with a mirror if you have to. Make
sure its not coming from a core (freeze) plug which are on that side of the
engine. Some of the 235's cyl heads had a habit of cracking but usually top
center in the area between the valve cover and intake manifold.

If you actually see water coming out between the block and head where the
gasket is, then there's not much else you can do other than pull the head. I
don't know your skill level but the most technical items will be re-adjusting
the valves and the proper method of re-installing the intake/exhaust manifolds.
Next down on the list is head bolt torque and sequence. It would be a good idea
to have the cyl head resurfaced before re-installing. And of course, while the
head is at the engine machine shop, you should get their opinion on the
condition of the valves/seats/guides/etc. If they need work, now is the time to
do it.

Curious to hear what you find.

Jeff

2008-01-06 Thread Jeffrey Pohlar
I'm pretty sure I know which ones you are talking about. The forward and aft
lens were separated by a "center section" which I would say were about 3" in
length. I had a set on my truck but they were so badly rusted that I couldn't
save them. The bad news is that I've kept my eyes out for modern equivalent
lamps but haven't seen anything in my travels. Seems everything out there,
Truck-Lite, Peterson, and Grote have lights similar but the lenses are
basically back to back.

Every once in a while I think about fabricating a set. With time and materials,
I think they would cost me about $500. Oh well, maybe when I'm retired. Let us
know if you find anything.

I shall now google signal stat and see what it turns up. Thanks for the help.
