[old-chevy-truck] Oil line from Pump

2008-11-28 Thread JZ
I have a cracked oil line that runs from the pump to the block. It is 7/16 in
size, about 6 inches long, metal tubing and no one has any such line or an
adapter for this line. Where can I get something like this or what can I
substitute for it?

[old-chevy-truck] Dual exhaust manifold

2008-11-28 Thread Roy Marks
Well..I did a dumb thing. Maybe one of you can benefit. I made a trade with
someone and got myself a nice dual exhaust manifold. I then sent it off to the
Jet Hot folks to have it coated in their dark gray finish. I just got it back
and its beautiful. Smiling ear to ear I went to lash it up to my 216 dual
intake manifold.

Awww crap!

My intake is the 37-53 style the exhaust is the 50-62 style...studs are only
3/16's of an inch different...might as well be a foot..they don't match up.

I would like to try to recoup some of my loss. If anyone is interested in a
beautiful 50-62 style dual exhaust manifold, ping me offline at [EMAIL
PROTECTED] I can't let it go cheap but thought I would give you guys first shot
before auctioning it off.

Why not keep it and locate yourself an intake that will work with it.
Then sell off the stuff you won't need or want to recoup a few bucks.

[old-chevy-truck] cracked 216 news

2008-11-28 Thread Jeffrey Pohlar
Might remember that back in March 08 I discovered an external crack in the cyl
block of my 216. Since then I've been trying to figure a good solution. I still
used the truck anyway, but just had to make sure that it was kept full of
coolant etc. Well during the summer, while my one employee was using the truck
for personal use, it was severly overheated and blew a head gasket at the very
least. One thing I knew for sure, when water was put in the radiator, #5 cyl
filled up with water and water ran out between the block and head.

Contrary to what he told me, I strongly suspect that he overheated it many
times while he was using it to go back and forth to work. I've heard that
evidence through the grapevine around here after the fact.

In my world of equipment repair, that likely means that all the previously new
valve springs are shot and the piston rings have shrunk along with a certainly
warped and possibly cracked head to go along with an already cracked block.
Although I painstakenly overhauled that engine 6-7 years ago, it probably still
only had 12,000 miles on it. Oh well. I should've known better. He no longer
works here. Not just because of that. He had other issues as well.

Luckily, I was the winning bidder of the NOS 216 short block on eBay a couple
of days ago. It has arrived and I am amazed with it. It still has the Genuine
Chevrolet Replacement Parts tag hanging on it with the recommended break in
procedures. Although its dusty/dirty, it has no oxidation to speak of. It is
coated with a very thin film of something. Must be good stuff. The casting date
code shows it to be a late 49 casting but it has the same block casting number
as the 53 model year engine currently in the truck.

Looks like I'll be building another 216 soon. This one has to be completely
disassembled for cleaning but I can live with that. I also have an empty NOS
cyl head here that I picked up a couple of years ago but I may or may not use
it. Depends on the condition of my warped head after an inspection.

Pretty happy about this situation so far so I thought I'd share. It amazes me
what NOS parts are still floating around. Someone recently had a boatload of AD
Chev truck stuff a couple of months ago. There was alot of stuff I wanted but
just couldn't justify it.

2008-11-28 Thread Jonas Thaler
Sounds like KARMA. You got a perfect block that's rare as hen's teeth
and you ridded yourself and your business of a sub-par (or at least
problematic) employee. You will enjoy your truck all the more
because of the adversity you have been through together.

[old-chevy-truck] 51 216 water pump

2008-11-28 Thread dave_99_welch
Well I started her up, and began to top off the water in the
radiator, heard a loud crack sound and then I began to get sprayed in
the face. Thought I spilled, but no
such luck. The water pumps is leaking pretty bad around the bearing.
I checked out Kragen, and they have a new on for 114 and rebuilt for
55. Both are "Cardone". The new one says it has ball/roller vs
ball/ball. Also, hyping up tight machining tolerances, etc. than
original design (as original designs are old... I don't want to throw
money away, but also don't want to be doing this again any time soon.

Any thoughts/advice? Are there better brands out there, etc?

Says 5/8 pulley, so I measure my belt width, and it is 5/8". Anything
else I need to check out?

Thanks,
David

Re: [old-chevy-truck] 51 216 water pump

2008-11-28 Thread Jeffrey Pohlar
The last w/p I put on mine was a reman from Carquest. I don't believe it was a
Cardone so the problem I had with mine may not apply to yours.

A week or two after installation, it developed a "rubbery squeal" noise.
Defect/warranteed that one and installed another one just like it, including
the noise a week or so later.
