[old-chevy-truck] Engine swap Question

2010-08-21 Thread Ron
I have a 54 1/2 ton with an engine in an unknown condition and missing things
like carbs, air filter, generator, coil, etc. I have a chance to get a later
model 230 6 cylinder from an early 60's Nova. I realize this isn't keeping it
stock, but I'm curious if others may have done something similiar and how much
work will it be. I assume that engine mounts may need to be changed and the
transmission may not be a direct swap either. And I probably can't keep the
foot starter.

Any suggestions pro or con would be appreciated.

Ron

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Engine swap Question

2010-08-21 Thread Goulet, John A.
I have a friend with a 1946 which has almost the identical engine in it
(early 60s 235). He still has the original tranny as well as the foot starter.
I don't think the engine mounts were modified, either.

[old-chevy-truck] dual master cylinder

2010-08-21 Thread dbay2fam
I would like to put a dual master cylinder in my 55 1st series truck. Has
anybody done this and what problems do I expect to come across. I'm doing this
for safety reasons. An has anybody put power brake booster on their truck and
does the transmission cross-member have to be changed or modified. Thank you
for all the good information that the group gives out.

[old-chevy-truck] Re: Engine swap Question

2010-08-21 Thread wbn...@sbcglobal.net
The 230 would be good choice for a modern inline engine. Some v8 parts fit it
(pistons, bearings, clutch, flywheel, etc.). The bell housing pattern is same
as a v8.

With a new intake manifold, you can use a 4 barrel carb.
HEI distributor is available as bolt in.

New engine mounts will have to be made or buy from Chassis Engineering.

No, the foot starter would not work unless you fix it with an electric push
button controlled by the foot.
Your original bell housing & transmission will not bolt to it unless you use an
adapter plate.
With the 230, that would be a good time to upgrade transmission to a 5 speed
overdrive or an automatic with an open drive rear from an S10 four wheel drive.

Your radiator may have to move forward if using a mechanical fan, or use an
electric for clearance. This depends on where you set the engine. Once set up
with the 230,
You could always change to a V8 in its place, later if wanted.

The other reply about the 235 is totally a different mod. It will almost bolt
in, in place of the original engine, using same bell housing and transmission.
The 230 is not as easy as explained above.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Just my Thoughts,
Walt

Sorry, I guess my email came through blank.

I really appreciate all of the feeback that I received.  Now that my head has
stopped spinning (I think??), I will head back to the drawing boards.  Classes
at the local community college is a great idea and I never thought about
thatI will definetly be looking into it.

One of the good brand names (miller, licoln, etc.) is what I would like to end
up getting but was looking for something inexpensive and basic just to get an
idea of how things work before dropping a lot of money.  Have been searching
craigslist but come up ended handed so far.

Once again, I really appreciated everyone's thoughts and feedback.

On the con side, a 250 or 292 would be better.  On the pro side, V8 conversion

[old-chevy-truck] RED RYDER BLUES - COOLING AND CHARGING SYSTEMS

2010-08-21 Thread tikuayla
Howdy Boys and Girls, well, RED RYDER and I made it to Payson Arizona,
Thursday, for a weekend of Rodeo; however poor ol' RED RYDER had some serious
OVER HEATING problems. A friendly garage mechanic tried to help us out by
installing a 160 degree thermostat and a new 7 pound radiator cap, but to no
avail. RED RYDER had to ride on two 'flat bed' haulers; once back into Payson
and also a ride home, from Payson, back to Gilbert, AZ.

RED RYDER has a stock 216 with the stock old time fan on the water pump pulley.
I would appreciate some input as to the options I have to upgrade, fix, repair
and/or improve RED RYDER's cooling system.

A few ideas given me by well meaning folks, up in Payson, who were sad to see
that RED RYDER would NOT be in Saturday's Rodeo parade (maybe next year).

1. Flush out the engine.

2. Recore and/or repair the existing radiator, or replace it and increase
number of rows.

3. Install a fan shroud.

4. Install a light weight, modern, more efficient fan.

5. Install electric thermostat controlled radiator fans.

6. Buy and install a complete street rod radiator/fan shroud/electric fans
system

Next: RED RYDER's electrical charging challenge. When RED RYDER is at idle,
the charging system goes into a deep discharge; noted on the amp gauge and the
lights dimming considerably. RED RYDER has a 12 volt system with an
alternator that has four wires connected to it and there is no voltage
regulator. It is my understanding that there is an alternator set up that
charges fully, as needed, even when the RPM's are low. Would you all, please,
give me your input as to what I might do to improve RED RYDER's charging system
to prevent the deep discharge/dimming lights situation?

Sure do wish I coulda been in that parade and gone to the dance after the
Rodeo, tonight, but, at least I am in my nice cool air conditioned home.

Charlie, not driving that cool RED RYDER, today..

Re: [old-chevy-truck] Re: initial static timing settings

2010-08-21 Thread G. Kelly
Nate,

That happened to me once 50+ years ago on my 1940 61 cube during my first
try at starting it after I finished a rebuild. The whole family was
standing there watching. As I was picking myself up off the ground a few
feet away my Father, who knew my mistake, said, "Here, I'll start it and
take the first spin on it." He sure did spin too. He lost control on the
gravel road out front and rode it into an irrigation canal on the far side.
As I stood on the bank looking at my Harley in the canal he came climbing up
the bank saying, "Don't panic! I'll run down to my shop and bring the
wrecker back. We'll get it out."

Thanks for the memories, Nate.

Re: [old-chevy-truck] Engine swap Question

2010-08-21 Thread Bruce Ioppini
Why not just put in another 235 (or better yet, 261). Everything bolts up, but
make sure you put one in with the front motor mount and not the side.  I used a
261 in my 38 and it fit except had to put in timing gear cover with motor mount
holes in the front to replace the side mounts. Even the floor starter works,
everything!!    Bruce

[old-chevy-truck] Re: Engine swap Question

2010-08-21 Thread wbn...@sbcglobal.net
The v8 frame mounts could work but you have to offset the engine mount to
match. They are not in the same location in factory equipped cars/trucks.
There is a V8 frame mount and a 6 cyl. frame mount.

Your easiest and fastest way is to put in a 235 or 261 as suggested.

The 194, 230, 250 are of one design and the 292 block is taller. They can all
use the same head. These engines are of total different design and fit of
accessories than the 235/261.

I would suggest finding a 235 or 261 unless you want to fab and make fit
everything.
The 235/261 can use your existing bell housing, transmission and closed drive.
The 230 group will not use these unless you have an adaptor built and that is
big for a machine shop.

Just my Thoughts,
Walt
