2011-03-29 Thread Michael Chmielewski

Hi Ken,

Yes, I will post the pics.  Its been at a professional restorer since 2007 and
is 65% done.  We spent an entire year gathering major parts cause I wanted a
change from L6 to a 283 which involves many parts.  There was a lot of body
reconstruction.  They have a special process of restoring the metal (not a
bondo job).  It is now ready for paint.

When it's finished should be as it was when it rolled out of the factory in
1959 plus with most of the available non-commercial truck options for 1959.
Hardest option seeking evaporator for Cool-Pack A/c.  Have rebuilt condenser
and compressor plus brackets and hoses.

I am in sunny Melbourne Florida, been here since 1998.

I feel that eBay (nation wide) or Craigslist-Detroit are the first places to
list this.

If you're not familiar with these sites, find someone to help; put your best
foot forward the first time.

[old-chevy-truck] 261 Questions

2011-03-29 Thread bob_sharp
Hi Group,

I am considering purchasing a 261 almost complete (no air cleaner) engine
from a local person parting out a truck and had a few questions.

I believe (based on casting #'s) it to be a 1958 - 1962 261 block and head
in a 1961 Chev C-60. It has the 3/4" pipe thread fittings going to the
oil filter.

The owner claims that it will run (he was not there when I was inspecting
so I did not witness myself). It has a tag from a local rebuilder
claiming that the rods and mains were 010 under and bore was 060 over. The
harmonic balancer & pulley are a little loose - has about 1" play in
rotation and minor fore and aft play. The oil seems very thin and over
full. I suspect the carb may not be original (had a decal from a carb
rebuilder). Radiator was low (no coolant visible in top tank).

It has been sitting for some time and the truck is pretty rough. He had
clip leads to fire the coil and add on electric fuel pump.

Being that it is a 060 over bore (I think) is this still worth while? and
if so, without any further testing what would be a fair price?

If I can do a compression test what would be acceptable psi and if good
then what it be worth?

How can I identify the correct carb for a 261?

Any idea what the issue is with the harmonic balancer?

Goal would be to drop in, or rebuild (if possible) and put in my '57 3100.
Eventually perhaps duel carb and exhaust.

Any advice would be appreciated. THANK YOU.

Best Regards,
Bob

[old-chevy-truck] Re: serial #'s

2011-03-29 Thread chris
Unfortunately I don't have a title and the tag does not look stock. The truck
is a standard 125"wb panel with a roll up window on each side. It does not
have a coach built body. Interestingly though I was at a customers house doing
a service call and they were watching an old episode of the Untouchables.
There was an ambulance with the same side window configuration but was probably
a 38 or 39 judging from the front clip. I'll post some pictures as soon as I
can. Thanks Z

Also - any suggestions of what else I should inspect to evaluate the

I would also check the engine size before you set your price. The GMC 302 is
the largest in this series (& most sout after by hot rodders); will bring more
$.
