[old-chevy-truck] valve adjustments

2011-12-18 Thread Ken Wagner
Hey guys.
I am getting around to the final assembly of my rebuilt 235. I know that the
valves need to be adjusted hot, but
I need to do a cold  adjust before I fire it up because some of the gaps are
way too much. Is there a rule of thumb
on how much clearance to start with? Any help is appreciated.
Ken

[old-chevy-truck] Re: 54 Chevy 1/2 ton Question

2011-12-18 Thread Ron

Interesting, my research shows the 55 rear end is 3.90 ratio and I had someone
tell me with larger rear tires he could easily run highway speeds. But then he
did not tell me what rpm he was running.

I bought a 55 1st P/U trailer for the truck bed, but I am curious if
the open drive train rear end is also a direct bolt in to my 54 or close to
it with little or no modification. My engine is toast but I have a 235 that
was in a 49 3/4 ton including the 4 speed tranny and the drive shaft. I know
I will have to shorten the drive shaft, but I hoping otherwise I can bolt in
the new drive train and rear end into my 54. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Will I have to put in a different cross member to support the open drive
tranny? Guess there should be one of those on the 55 trailer frame. Maybe
one of these days I can do something with this 54 instead of just collecting
 parts :)

 Thanks Ron

[old-chevy-truck] Valve Adjustment ~ Initial

2011-12-18 Thread Nate

No ;

Just cold set 'em to the normal hard use gaps and remember to check and adjust
them again in 500 miles , 1,500 miles then every 3,000 miles until they settle
in and stop drifting .

I do hope you replaced all those nasty cheapo original cast iron valve guides
with good Bronze ones .

-Nate
 Ken Asked :
I do have a chevy related question:
I finally got my 235 back from the shop and am reassembling it. I had to find
another head to replace the old cracked one.
I know that the valves need to be adjusted after the engine is hot, but before I
fire it up, the valve lash has to be tightened up a little. (most of the
clearances at this point are WAY in excess of what the specs call for while
hot.)
Should I adjust them .005 or .010 over initially?
As always any help is appreciated and may you all have a blessed Christmas and
many successes for the New Year.
Ken Wagner

It should be a 3.90 unless it was sold in Colorado or a special order truck .

[old-chevy-truck] Monojet Air Cleaner FOUND !

2011-12-18 Thread Nate

Whew ~ as usual , Pick-A-Part came through again at last ~ I stumbled upon a
'72 Nova Coupe that was being dismantled in the rows, the nice Gentleman only
wanted the short block and so had a HUGE pile of assorted head , brackets ,
carby , fuel pump , alternator , hardware , on and on

A big crowd was standing there watching , I got to the pile and then asked
what about all these parts ? ~ he said have at 'em son so I grabbed the
Rochester Monojet carby and near perfect air cleaner can with Thermactor and
hot air pipe un damaged .

They only charged me $22 for the air cleaner and $49.99 for the carby , no
warranty of course .

I'm stoked ! .

My old carby's inlet fitting stripped late Thursday night so it leaks and the
carby is now truly dead .

Lots more you don't want to be bored with but it's been a *VERY* busy and
productive weekend ! .
