You're supposed to mount them in the sump so they'll work at slowly pulling the 
ferrous SWARF through the oil even when it's parked .

Once in a while I'll get an oldie that's *so* full of SWARF I'll put two 
magnetic drain plugs in it and clean both regularly , the upper one always has 
less , and finer SWARF on it .

Magnets are very important , so much so that GM began putting them inside their 
slushbox trannys in the late 1970's ~ I find that more than 50 % of the Shop ' 
Mechanics ' are *so* lazy , they remove and discard these instead of cleaning 
and re installing them  .

Sigh .
