[old-chevy-truck] Truck Noise
Hi All I think I posted something on this a few months ago. I continue to have a noise that I believe is coming from the lower part of my engine - maybe in the oil pan area. The noise is a rattle or bang that is pretty noisy when I first start the engine but decreases as I rev the engine but then returns at idle. I have a 1954 full pressure 235. The oil pressure remains normal even when driving the truck and the temp is ok. Can an oil pump make this sort of noise? The engine was completely rebuilt about 2000 miles ago by a top notch mechanic. I've added a link to a youtube video so that everyone can listen to the noise. You'll hear a slight pinging but it's the banging noise that has me concerned. Here's the link: http://youtu.be/irrv-cUrsV4 Thanks for everyone's help. Ken 1950 3100 Deluxe
RE: [old-chevy-truck] Installing 235 Clutch Fork
I usually position the throwout bearing and clutch fork together before installing the transmission. Bill in Oregon _ From: old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com [mailto:old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of ima.p...@yahoo.com Sent: Sunday, September 22, 2013 11:23 AM To: old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com Subject: [old-chevy-truck] Installing 235 Clutch Fork I recently removed my trans and flywheel in order to replace the starter gear ring due to excessive wear. I now have the trans and flywheel (with new gear ring) installed. But, I'm having difficulty getting the clutch fork reinstalled. I can't quite slip the fork onto the throwout bearing as the ballstud, on which the clutch fork pivots, is in the way. It looks as though, if I remove the ballstud I'll be able to get the fork onto the bearing. But, I don't think I'll have enough room to reinstall the ball stud. So, what's the procedure to reinstalling the clutch fork? Any hints?

Bill, I don't drive the truck much so it was probably a year after the build that the noise began. I can't tell if its getting worse but have noticed that it improves as the truck runs or the engine it revved. RE: [old-chevy-truck] Truck Noise
Sounds related to oil pressure. You may want to be sure you have adequate oil pressure. The next cheapest thing to check is the valve adjustments. If that's not it, pull the oil pan and check the bearings. [old-chevy-truck] oiling
Hi All,Should there be a lot or little oil coming in the top of the engine around the lifters. I have removed the valve cover gasket and can lift the valve cover off after i shut the engine off after running for a few minutes and not much oil is present. Is this normal or should there be a good bit coming up inside valve cover and then draining back down thru the holes? Thanks, Robert __._,_.___ Ole Chevy and GMC trucks rule! Run it with the valve cover off. You should have some oil coming out at EACH rocker arm. (The lifters are inside the engine so you can't see them under the valve cover.) RE: [old-chevy-truck] Truck Noise
Before you start pulling the pan try this for additional information: Get the engine to its noisiest operation. Leave it running. Remove #1 spark plug wire. Did the noise get better, worse or stay the same? Put number 1 spark plug wire back on. Now do the same with each of the other plug wires, one at a time. If the problem is in the bottom of the engine (crank/rod/piston) you should be able to tell which cylinder is causing grief when you have that cylinder's plug wire off. Use well insulated pliers (FLAPS has special plastic pliers just for this) to do the job. Or buy your brother-in-law a couple of beers and have him pull the wires bare handed. [old-chevy-truck] How to start a 216 that has been resting sixteen years
Hello;I did try to search the group, because I suspected this question had been answered before. I was not successful in finding an answer. So I apologize for the possible rerun. I do wish too determine if my 50 Chevy with a 216 will start. I remember the radiator top leaked, and it would run hot if ran to long when I parked it the fall of97. I cant remember if I ever ran it hotter than I should have, but something caused me to stop driving it. I have done nothing with it since it was parked, except put air in the tires, spray the wasp nests, and move it out of the field last week. This week, I wish to find if the engine can still fire. Seems Iremember I shouldpour small amounts of oil through the spark plug openings and let it soak before trying to fire the engine, true? Stale fuel? Thats a problem. Anything else Ive overlooked?F ull disclosure; Im on the fence. Not sure yetif my goal is to restore the 5 window, or sell. But either way Id like to at least know if it would start again, and how to determine that without causingpossible damage to an engine. Thanks for any help. RE: [old-chevy-truck] How to start a 216 that has been resting sixteen years
Yes, get all of the old gas out of the tank, carb and fuel line. I would wire brush the plugs and gap them. Put some oil in plug holes and let it sit overnight. If you've marked the plug wires (#1 is at the radiator) leave the plugs out. Maybe look at the oil; change it out plus filter if there is any chance 16 years of water condensation is in the oil. It'll be easiest to turn over with the plus out. An assistant can tell you if the wires are sparking which means you won't have to clean off the wires and pints.
