RE: [old-chevy-truck] Transmissions
A good solution is the Borg R10 Overdrive which is basically a 6 speed standard, but that works with 3 on the tree the best. I want a shifter in the floor. Since I am trying to make it look exactly like it belongs with the truck, I want the shifter to come out of the floor exactly where the stock one did. I 'could' live with the T5 out of an S10 because it had the integrated shifter and its about 2 inches further back than our original, but I will check out this A833. I just want to get 70-75mph out of the truck. Too bad they dont make upgrade kits for the original tranny. Both of the above I mentioned bolt right on to the original bell housing. Re: [old-chevy-truck] Transmissions
I agree that there are many solutions that bolt right on the original bell housing, but none bolt to the torque tube on the rear of the stock SM420 or SM318. That means a new driveshaft and rear end. A833 is available with two different noses (input shaft bearing carrier), one for Mopar and one for GM. I'm pretty sure the GM model is a bolt on to the original bell housing. The Mopar model requires some machine work on the bearing carrier to turn it down to the size that fits into the GM bell housing. - Original Message - From: Deve Krehbiel dkrehb...@cox.net To: old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2013 12:37:59 PM Subject: RE: [old-chevy-truck] Transmissions A good solution is the Borg R10 Overdrive which is basically a 6 speed standard, but that works with 3 on the tree the best. Re: [old-chevy-truck] Transmissions
One guy on OldGMCtrucks.com even set his A833 up to use the H pattern 3 on the tree shifter to run all 4 of the forward speeds on the A833 (the nornal reverse position on the shifter engages low gear, normal 1st is actually second, normal second is actually 3rd and normal 3rd is actually 4th). Reverse is actuated with a separate push/pull cable with the H pattern in neutral. Pretty slick for those who like to work with a column mounted shifter. I'll bet that there are very few on this e-mail list that know what production car had a 4 on the tree with a separately activated reverse. - Original Message - From: bill hanlon bill_han...@comcast.net To: old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2013 3:05:36 PM Subject: Re: [old-chevy-truck] Transmissions I agree that there are many solutions that bolt right on the original bell housing, but none bolt to the torque tube on the rear of the stock SM420 or SM318.
