2013-09-16 Thread Cale Seavers
Don,
I went through this while replacing the headliner on my 51. There are quite a
few variants on the peel-n-stick products out there, but I found all of them to
be VERY expensive per sq ft. I ended up going to my FLAPS and buying a roll of
sound/heat reducer (about $20) and a can of headliner adhesive ($10). It worked
great and was much cheaper. I had a ton left over and ended up using the extra
to sound insulate the trunk of my 97 integra. The only problem I could see in
your application would be behind the seat, it would be difficult to do this
area without removing the seat and tank first. Also, inside the doors would be
very difficult. Maybe spray goo in the easy to reach areas and peel-n-stick in
the more difficult ones? Good luck!

Hi, I am looking to replace and add some sound deadening material while I
have the '51 apart - under the headliner is toasty and falling out, same for
inside the firewall, and I would like to add some inside the doors and behind
the seat and corners. There are several products being advertised and the
pricing varies as much also - any ideas on the products would be appreciated.

Hi Cale, thanks for the reply. Truck is bare except for old glass, so now
is the time to insulate I think. good idea on the roof area, and the self
adhesive product of some form on the rest - I have found 70 mil down to
around $1.70 sq' for the 100sq ft rolls on ebay. The specialty shops seem to
want a lot more $$.

after doing a lot of research, i ended up using products from
raamaudio.com/ http://www.raamaudio.com/ his products seem to fit the
bill for sound deadening with a decent price and had good reviews in the
car audio forums. i used double layer of rammatt inside my cab, followed by
a double layer of ensolite foam and then carpet on the floor. for the doors
i have full size door panels, so i was able to use a sinlgle layer of
rammatt and ensolite on my whole door. i also used lots of small pieces of
rammatt to cover most of the outer skin of the doors. i only used a single
layer of ensolite foam under the headliner. the rammatt is self adhesive
butyl, ensolite needed to be glued down. i see he offers self adhesive
ensolite now. i also had the bottom of my cab and the back inside the
cab sprayed with rhino liner bed liner.

my truck has been on the road 3 yrs and 20,000 miles with no failures or
delaminations. it does keep the sound down, but nothing will eliminate road
or engine noise, that's what the volume control on the stereo is for. i
still get a lot of wind noise from my doors at 80 mph.

i'd be leery of anything off of ebay. a lot of those guys buy the peel n
stick roofing membrane from home depot. some say it works, some say it
falls off after a year or two. some say it smells like tar, some say it's
not that bad. being the first layer of your interior, i'd rather not have
 it fail or smell.
