RE: [old-chevy-truck] steering wheel
I know this one!!! PICK ME! Use a sledge hammer or a giant pipe wrench! Happy Fathers Day! Seriously, I have always removed the nut, then pretty gently tapped the back of the wheel at the base using a piece of wood (pine or something rather soft) with a hammer. I use PB Blaster (12 oz can that dissolves rust) on the spline to make things easier. Takes PB about a day or even two to work so you have to plan for it. Don't hit it too hard and go around it nudging it out from all angles. Re: [old-chevy-truck] steering wheel
I do it this way, never fail way! 1. Remove the horn button- either pry out, loosen screws, or press down and turn-- depends on the type of horn button you are working on. 2. Loosen the nut, and remove it. 3. Use a good penetrating oil to help loosen on the spline. Relax and let it soak there for a day or so. 4. Re-install the nut, but do not screw it in all the way against the wheel-- leave about 1/8 or 3/15 inch gap. 5. Use a brass drift on the nut, and while pulling out on the wheel to apply pressure on the wheel, tap or lightly pound on the drift. (you might need a buddy to help you with this) 6. When the wheel comes loose of the spline, remove the nut and then the wheel. IF YOU ARE GONNA REPLACE THE SAME WHEEL, BE SURE AND MARK WHERE IT GOES SO IT WILL BE CENTERED. Re: [old-chevy-truck] Steering wheel alignment
If all you are doing is aligning the wheel, the steering wheel is the easiest. However, if you are looking for equal travel in both directions, you have to center the pitman arm first. My steering wheel had 50+ years of dirt, oil and grime on it, so it was a pleasure to take off and clean up. Unbelievable how much grime and crud came off that old wheel. Five coats of paint later, it looks like newand is finally lines up right. Re: [old-chevy-truck] Steering wheel paint
Jon, when I restored my steering wheel, I used regular spray can acrylic enamel. I painted mine black, and used 3-4 coats of black, then 3-4 coats of clear. It has held up really well for the past 4 years. Two things you might want to consider in terms of steering wheel paint. The first is a product called Bulldog Adhesion Promoter. It supposed to help paint adhere to plastic/rubber. I've tried the Bulldog on plastic and it works great. Should be available at paint stores that sell to body shops. The second product you might want to consider is the new paint by Krylon called Fusion. This paint is made especially for plastics. I haven't used it, but it's supposed to work very well. Neither product was available when I restored my wheel, so I obviously didn't use them. However, I've had no problems at all with paint peeling off the steering wheel. Just a note..be SURE to wash all the crud and grime off the SW before you paint it. If yours is anything like mine, it has 50+ years of oil and gunk soaked into it. No paint can stick to that oily mess. I had to wash mine several times with hand cleaner and a strong solution of Tide. Just keep washing until no more black comes off on your hands.
