72 Cutlass starting problems
I was driving today and the car just died which has never happened before, checked the carb is getting gas, then checked the distributor which is a HEI, came with the car, changed the ignition module and coil pack, car started up after quite a few tries and moving the cap around some, then drove it back home, then it got worse, had to pull over every couple of blocks, at the stop light it ran and died out, on her last leg when I put it in drive it died out but after a few tries in park it would start by this time the battery went down from all the starts, a co-worker informed me that the timing may have moved but the distrubutor has been fastend down for the last 2 years and has not been touched since then, meanwhile he said that i may have bent the valves because of the timing may be off, hope not but since the trans has been rebuilt and the motor has not been touched I guess the motor is next, any suggestions, the motor is a 72 350 4bbl, and what we figured at Advance Auto the HEI may be from a 75 350. Re: Aurora problems
I had a similar problem with my 95 Aurora. I can't recall what the problem turned out to be. I'll check this weekend to see if I still have any paperwork from that. I no longer have the car so I may have tossed that file. -- Kurt Heinrich OCA# 30442 71 Cutlass Supreme SX Convertible -- Hello List, I am having some issues with my 98 Aurora. It is running rough at idle (surging etc.) and up to about 3000 rpm. Under hard acceleration, it pops or backfires in the intake/airbox or such. This it started doing this about two weeks ago and has been getting worse. The service engine light came on today, but was off the last time I drove it. My mileage has also been getting worse...usually averages 20 mpg but it is now down around 17.5 mpg.Anyone have any ideas? I am on digest. Thanks Tom Atencio Littleton CO 68 442 70 F85 98 Aurora

Thoughts on 78-88 Gauge packages
There were so many bulbs burned out, I couldn't see the speedo at night anymore. Since it was coming out, I tried a couple of ideas. High brightness white LEDs to replace those hot and short lived illuminators. The trouble with LEDs, is they send out a rather narrow cone of light instead of omnidirectional. I had some plug in LED replacements, which had an inverted cone top to redirect the light in a side circle. Trouble was, this was not the right place for my gauges. Maybe a custom arrangement could use LED illumination, but the plug ins get a big X. The next problem with these gauges is where the turn signal and high beam indicators are jammed into a left over spot. These are too small, the old plastic lenses are gradually turning opaque, and they are directly behind the rim of my steering wheel. Possible solution: put some colored LEDs along the bottom edge of the gauge package. 2 green for each turn signal, a blue for high beam. Drilling a .195" hole (file a little) lets an LED glue in. The LED should be pushed all the way in, bacause there is little room for them behind. But that means they can't be at the very bottom edge, or they will hit the clear cover. The LED beam is somewhat narrow, but plenty wide for the driver. Since it points right into your eye, the power level should be very low. The problem shifts from being invisible, to being too bright. Maybe a resistor to allow 1 ma current. Question is, does there need to be a day/night dimmer for the turn signal indicators? This has promise (that I'll no longer drive down the road with a turn signal running). A little more experimentation should work this out. Maybe another time, I'll take another shot at replacing those troublesome illumination bulbs. Some other work on these units concerns cleaning up poor contacts, which degrades gauge readings and lights. Most of this can be fixed better than new, by a combination of cleaning contact surfaces, and a few wires added to parallel the circuit board paths. The actual gauges are quite reliable. Bruce Roe

Get an axle puller (Auto Zone will loan one to you) and jerk out the axles. Clean the axles, press off the old bearings and retainers and press on the new bearings and retainers. Next remove the old axle seals and replace them with new ones. You will need a seal puller or a slide hammer with an attachment. The seals are pressed in the end of the axle housing. The best way to press them back in is to find a socket that is rhe right diameter and hammer them back into the axle tubes. I'm sorry, what? The seals are outboard of the bearings on my '70 O-type 12-bolt, meaning that one has to change the bearings to change the seal. I had to do that just a year ago - wasted a perfectly good bearing. Are '65 O-types different? Now, my '79 RX-7 has sealed axle bearings with the axle seal pressed into the housing inboard of the bearing, as you describe. With the Edelbrock intake as Dennis pointed out. > Seller's payment instructions > WIRE TRANSFERRED BEFORE ITEM CAN BE SHIPPED. > EBay themselves state to never do a wire transfer. Ebay tells you never to do a wire transfer yet they haven't disallowed it as a form of payment. They seem to leave it up to the buyer's discretion whether to trust the seller enough to use a wire transfer. Ebay has an odd way of handling their own policies at times. I went round and round with them a few months ago about a parts car auction of mine that they kept removing. Finally they told me that the problem was that I mentioned the car having a clear title. HUH?! Why can't a junk car have a clear title? If the car has a title Ebay does not consider it a parts car BECAUSE Ebay does not have a brokerage license, therefore they cannot charge a fee based on the final sales price. That's why Ebay charges a flat $40 to list and a $40 final value fee for the "normal" cars for sale catagory. Ebay's customer service rep told me to relist the car, but DO NOT mention a title. As long as I don't say that I have a clear title for any car that I list in the parts cars catagory, I'll be ok. Otherwise, they'll shut down my auctions and suspend my account if I persist in doing so. So, most of the cars in the parts car catagory are being sold illegally under Ebay's own policy if they mention having a title. Cute...can you say Ebay doesn't want to lose the revenue from those auctions therefore they give you a way to get around their own policy. In PA, I have to have a title just to junk the car!! There's ways around that too, but... Anyways... It is a nice looking '72 C/S, but I don't think it's Buy-it-Now at $12,900 nice. I have a feeling it's mostly a nice paint job on a car that has been kinda thrown together. That's what I'm seeing by the pics anyway. The undercarriage pics make it look like a daily driver that someone gave a paint job and slapped in a big block. A sharp looking driver or a work in progressatleast he's in the ballpark and not looking for $25 or $30 grand. Randy

He appears to be up to no good. If he sold it as a rolling chassis as he replied to Kerry...then no problemit's legal. >He is unusually mad at me right now And in this day and age, I have a feeling you could get him into some deep cow dung with the threats he has made to you. Just my opinion: VIN tags...illegal. As far as selling cowl tags, I don't know if it's legal or illegal. I understand what you and Dennis are both saying about this subject. Personally, I don't believe in selling or swapping any of the tags or title. I'm also one that believes a car that needs rebodied to survive has reached it's life expectancy and is ready to be parted and buried...no matter what it is. Most of the time, a cowl tag alone isn't gonna do diddly squat for someone trying to fake a rare car unless it shows some unusual paint or interior code like the cowl tag from my '72 H/O with the W45. Obviously, that tag, some paint and a few options can turn any Lansing built '72 Supreme with a factory 455 (U, V or X code vin) into a Hurst/Olds. Maybe I'm dense, but I don't see any benefit in someone taking sa...a green (exterior color) bench seat Cutlass and turning it into a bucket seat Viking blue car and swapping the cowl tag to match. That's done so often, that I can't see any monetary benefit in "showing" it as original. I don't feel that your average buyer would care if it was original or a conversion unless it was a concourse quality car. >I just don't like someone bastardizing our Olds hobby. Speaking of which, you have to be careful of anyone you buy a car from. Back in '99 or '00 I bought a car north of the border and the seller asked me if I could bring back a tranny and an envelope for a certain well known OAI hood reproducer/Olds restorer. Well, the guy came and picked up the tranny, but forgot the envelope (I wasn't home and my wife didn't know). Envelope wasn't sealed so I looked inside to see if was anything important or if it could wait until I saw him at Carlisle in a month or so. Inside...the three necessary pieces to make a 1970 442. He came out for the envelope. I asked him a couple years later what he did with the contents. He told me they were still sitting on his deskmakes me wonder though. Really nice person...no problem there...but are his cars real? Could one of those high dollar restorations that he sold at the Atlantic City auction really been a plain jane Cutlass? Randy
