Tried a few times but it always hangs at the same place.

Anything useful I can try?

Hmmm... I wonder if the .iso image is a bit too large for an actual physical CD?

Can you burn it onto a dvd?

[OmniOS-discuss] r151020 installer issues

2017-03-07 Thread John Barfield
I’m having several installer issues with the r151020 usb installer.

It keeps crashing at different parts with different errors.

My question is: should I be using r151014 and run pkg update until the next LTS
release?

Or is there a best-practices doc that I need to follow to get r151020 working
right?

This is a sunfire x4170 m2 – All intel, cpu’s, nics, chipset,etc,etc

You should under normal circumstances be able to install using the 020 media as
you are attempting to do.

Under normal circumstances, the "best practice" is boot the install image, and
use the installer. It would be really helpful to know what these errors you're
seeing consist of. X4170s are old Intel Westemere-based systems; OmniOS should
have no problems running on these. Are you using the on-board SAS controller in
a hardware RAID mode?

2017-03-07 Thread Dan McDonald
The installer crashes, or OmniOS itself crashes? I'd like to know at least a
bit more detail.

Btw, the installer for the next release of OmniOS is brand new, based on our
PXE installer Kayak. Between Loader replacing GRUB, Python2.7, and reports like
yours, it's time to put Caiman out to pasture.

If you're in a hurry, install 014, switch from SunSSH to OpenSSH on 014, and
then upgrade to 020.

2017-03-07 Thread John Barfield
Yeah, its definitely the hurry factor…this SAN was running r151012 and instead
of upgrading I’m just reinstalling. (going on pretty long outage duration now)

I did get python errors @99% the last time I ran the installer.

Here are a list of issues I had (I did not write down the actual error messages
so these are simply generic):

· Crashed @5% after copying data into var

oDropped to shell checked install log

§ Saw complaint about dumpdev not unmounting so I removed it and re-ran the
installer

· After rerunning the installer the system got to 99% and color
terminal disappeared…I just saw random messages about disks infinitely

oRebooted and reran installer

· This time I got all the way through the installer to 99% and it
crashed. A lot of python errors in the installer log.

· Gave up and downloaded the r14

[OmniOS-discuss] Quick Test of r151021 ISO Install using Xen HVM and an "xdf" Device

2017-03-07 Thread Prakash Surya
Hey All,

I just wanted to post and say that I've tested the new r151021 ISO
installer using a Xen VM and was able to successfully perform the
installation. Here's a copy of the Xen VM configuration that I used:

# cat ami-template.cfg
builder='hvm'
name='ami-template'
vcpus=4
memory=4096
vif=['bridge=xenbr0, type=ioemu']
#disk=[  'file:/root/psurya/omni-kayak/r151021-kayak.iso,hdb:cdrom,r',
#'file:/root/psurya/omni-kayak/ami-template.img,xvda,w' ]
disk=[  'file:/root/psurya/omni-kayak/ami-template.img,xvda,w' ]
#boot='d'
boot='c'
vnc=1
vnclisten='0.0.0.0'
vncconsole=1
on_crash='preserve'
xen_platform_pci=1
serial='pty'
on_reboot='destroy'

The only "catch", is I have to set "apix_enable" to 0. I do that using KMDB
during the installer (e.g. edit the loader so I drop to KMDB first), and
then edit "/etc/system" after the install is completed but prior to the
first boot (so I don't have to keep using KMDB for every boot).

If I don't set that tuning, the system will "hang" during boot up (this is
a problem with illumos and Xen HVM, and not specific to OmniOS or the new
ISO).

Additionally, I've attached a PNG image with some "zpool" and "format"
output from within the Xen VM running after the ISO install (hopefully the
mailing list doesn't strip the image from this post).

Cheers,
Prakash

The one you mention is pretty good, especially if you want 2 + 16 drives
(2x2.5", 16x3.5") online.

Unless you want something smaller, I can think of much worse ways to spend your
money.

Yeah - I do have a couple of those, even with the current X10 board and I am
really satisfied with those. Just throwed in another Intel 10GbE DP and hooked
them up to our Nexus network. Really solid boxes!

Hi.

I am looking at ordering a new 3U supermicro server. as an all-in

It has the LSI 3008 HBA in IT mode.

Any other suggestions out there?

The one you mention is pretty good, especially if you want 2 + 16
drives (2x2.5", 16x3.5") online.

Unless you want something smaller, I can think of much worse ways to
spend your money.

Thanks Stephan and Dan.

One thing I am not sure about is NVMe drives.

Are those stable?

You didn't mention anything in the original note about NVMe, and neither did
the spec sheet.

NVMe 1.0 and 1.1 should work on 020 and later OmniOS. Hang out on the illumos
developers list to see the latest on that front.

In regards of NVMe, I am eyeing this particular Supermicro and I intend to get
my hands on two of those in Q2:

SuperMicro SuperServer SSG-2028R-NR48N

I think these will bring a lot of fun to the table. ;)

Can you elaborate on that a little more as of what exactly you did to the
loader? I am guessing that you modified the kernel boot arguments, but
unfortuanetly, I am unfamiliar with the new loader.

No LSI controller on those, they connect directly to the CPU with razor cards.
In theory they can utilize the entire bus speed but in the backplane you get
around 2GB/sec throughout on each nvme drive.
