I'm sure one can set up the mounts to effect of old-day sparse-root zones.
Problem comes when you try to upgrade it or just add packages, and tools do not
expect such setup anymore.

Not true except for LX zones (which lofs mount things into /native) and
Joyent-brand zones on SmartOS. There's talk about us doing something like
Joyent-brand zones (lofs-mount /usr, /bin, /sbin), but we've too much to do
right now to make that happen.

If I remember right, zone create automatically create a mount using
lofi.. I used to add additional ones.

If you google old preso's of mine called "zany for zones" I used to show
examples.

I think, the power of lofs, that it doesn't do translations, etc. like nfs
does.
This behaviour doesn't depend on if the zone is an lx zone, or a solarish
one.
If you have a dataset what you want to use in multiple zones at the same
time, then it's your responsibility to keep the same uid set in all of them.

And that's also not an impossible thing: you can use yp or ldap for this
purpose. Whatever is your favourite.

Cheers,
Gyu
