[DISCUSS] [ooo-users] Speaking of ooo-users

2011-10-16 Thread Kay Schenk

I turn your attention to:

http://openoffice.org/projects/www/lists/users/archive

there seems to be a fair amount of continued activity here.

I could change the "subscribe" link on:
http://support.openoffice.org/

to get them to the new Apache users list, but, what to do about current
subscribers/conversations. Yes, we've discussed this a bit and,
truthfully, since I have NO admin powers on the existing mailing lists I
haven't been keeping up with it actually, but, given recent events, I
think it would be wise to get current users on board SOON with the new
set-up.

Thoughts? I don't know how to put the current list in read-only and I
thought someone (Dennis, Alex) said this could be done along with a
message to this list to that effect. I feel dealing with this particular
list (its total migration) should be a very high priority.

The last messages I find about this concern archiving the existing lists.

My apologies if I'm way behind on some of this conversation.

Let's not jiggle anything just yet. The options have not been explored and it
may be better to have some preparatory assistance of current-list moderators
and administrators. There are a ton of mailing lists under the live OO.o
site.

I'd suggest adding a footer to all these mailing list mails that states the
project is now at Apache and the list will be closed down in the future and
moved to an Apache.org address.

There should also be regular mails to the lists saying the same and inviting
list participants to join ooo-dev@incubator.apache.org to discuss their
needs.

As lists are created here you can change these headers and mails to warnings
about switch off with subscription instructions for the lists here.

In general, setting a ML footer is fairly easy to do, for an owner under
SYMPA.

I have a small problem w/r/t the @documentation lists, because we at
AOOo have made no provision for documentation at all.

Hopefully we can get some active members of the existing documentation
lists over here to tell us what they need and how they would like to
operate within the AOOo poject. Then we will have provision ;-)

This goes for all areas that were covered but are not currently
covered. The discussion starts here on the dev list and, if necessary,
we create infrastructure specific to any given activity.

It has been pointed out to me (offlist) that it might be inappropriate
to do this. I would therefore like to clarify something.

My suggestion to actively recruit from other communities was made with
the assumption that the infrastructure these groups are using is part
of the old OO.o infrastructure (i.e. their lists are
f...@openoffice.org) and therefore will be going away soon. If this
assumption is incorrect then it would probably be somewhat
disrespectful of that community (and others) to actively recruit in
this way.

RE: [DISCUSS] [ooo-users] Speaking of ooo-users

2011-10-17 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Ross,

It is not clear what is thought to be inappropriate.

The lists are definitely hosted at OO.o using particular mailing-list software
(SYMPA) and a variety of interfaces, including a very nice one for casual users
that allows one-stop shopping and list management for anyone having registered
an ID with OO.o.

It is not clear that the means of adding messages to posts is within our power,
and it might not be great on those many lists that are used by people for whom
English is not understood easily, if at all.

A better way is to make contact with the remaining active users of those lists
using the lists themselves and exploring how migration be dealt with, including
the prospect of shutting down the list altogether and going elsewhere (ooo-dev
is an unlikely prospect but for a small subset of the lists) or (unlikely)
migration of SYMPA such that the lists are preserved in operation but
re-subscription might be required in the manner it was accomplished for the
Bugzilla.

2011-10-17 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Having all of the discussion about the future of OO.o lists on ooo-dev is
probably ineffective. It would be good to engage on the OO.o lists and, in
particular, engage those moderators and administrators that have survived in
their roles to advise and assist in determining what needs to be done. In
particular, many lists will simply be shut down.

The individual list subscription pages on OO.o could be updated to indicate
what has happened, where the archive remains, and what the replacement is, if
any. Those pages probably won't come up until the domain is pointed to an
Apache version of the site.

Well, as it turns out, right AFTER I posted this I noticed Rob's
discussion on the MLs in general. So, I won't change any links, and I
have no power to add footers to the list messages. I guess we'll wait
for Rob's implementation that seems to cover ALL active lists.

Apparently my timing was off.
