[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Two Questions

2009-11-24 Thread Harbottle, Joel R
Hi All,

Just a brief and quick question.

What network ports are used by Evergreen? (So I know which ports to
unblock.)

And also, how can I get my normal Windows machine to talk to the virtual
Evergreen server (VirtualBox image)?

Kindest Regards,
Joel

A very quick thought: did you run /openils/bin/autogen.sh after the
upgrade?

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Error in 1.6.0.0 staff client Workstation Registration: g.aout_list is null

2009-11-24 Thread Repke de Vries

Anybody a suggestion how to solve this ?

We just did the 1.4.0.7 to 1.6.0.0 major upgrade without a glitch
(thx for the upgrade instructions !)

Now I am getting this error message [1] in the staff client when
entering the (first time use) Work Station Registration:

"..
The page at (my server's IP address) says:
TypeError: g.aout_list is null
.."

This happens both with the official Windows 1.6.0.0 staff client
(Installable from EG Download Page)

and on a MAC (Sitka binary [2])

Must be our upgrade ?

Thanks, Repke, IISH

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Buckets

2009-11-24 Thread Hardy, Elaine
Chris,

None of our libraries have reported duplicated titles. However, most of us
create and use the buckets on the same day so it may be that we just don't use
the buckets in a way to see the error. Also, have you tried refreshing the
bucket in case it is a display or sync issue? Refresh a few times to see if
that removes the duplicat es.

Copy buckets are useful for global changes to item attributes, deleting large
numbers of items and moving items attached to one bibliographic record to
another bibliographic record. Record buckets are used to merge duplicate
records. You can also create CSV files and export records from the record
buckets. PINES libraries generally only use record buckets to merge records so
I am not familiar with the exact nature of the other functions.

Subject: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Buckets

We are having a problem with record buckets in version 1.4.0.6. Items are added
to the bucket one day, and then there are duplicates (sometimes 2, 3 or even 4)
in the bucket the next day. Is anyone else having this problem? If so, what
have you done to fix it?

Also (please forgive my ignorance), what is the intended purpose of buckets?

One of the things we wanted to do with the record bucket was to print a list of
books that included call numbers, so that student workers could pull the books
for a display. I cannot seem to find a way to do that anywhere in Evergreen
(except maybe in a report).

Thanks,

Chris

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Buckets

2009-11-24 Thread OdonLibrarian

Hi, Chris. Finally, some discussion from the client side of things,
prompting my first post to the list.

Re the duplicate records: One possibility is that you're not hitting
refresh enough. You may think a record hasn't been added because it's not
showing and add it again. Then when the bucket gets refreshed it's in there
twice.

As to the purpose of buckets:
Record buckets can be used to collect records that need to be merged or
deleted or have holdings added.
For a list of items to pull from the shelf, you want to use a copy bucket
so you have shelving location and call number. Printing out the list isn't
difficult. One of the bucket options is to copy the entire bucket to the
clipboard. It is picked up in comma-delimited form and can be pasted into
a spreadsheet for further manipulation and printing.

I use copy buckets for items that need barcodes or spine labels or some
special processing.

It would be nice to have more batch processing options from the buckets.
One option for some batch processing is to save a list of barcodes (picked
up from a bucket or report) in CSV form -- no labels, no other fields, only
numbers. They can then be uploaded into the "item status" window,
selected as a set, and be modified as a group in the "item attributes" window.

Hope this helps.

This was one of the bugs fixed in 1.4.0.7. It was a
extra-transactional race condition with the Z import mechanism -- we
believe the last of its kind.

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] problems reingesting downloaded MARC records

2009-11-24 Thread Chris Caughey
Is anyone else having trouble getting Evergreen to "reingest" downloaded
MARC records? I download them, and can view them immediately thereafter
or by searching by record number. Otherwise, they are "lost" inside the
database. If anyone else is having that problem, what have you done to
fix it? We just upgraded to 1.4.0.6 last week, and the first time I
downloaded a MARC record, it reingested on its own, with no problem.
But ever since then, I have had the same problem as before.

Thanks,

Chris

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] importing authority records

2009-11-24 Thread Chris Caughey
We were having trouble using the authority batch import. The whole
process would move along without incident until it came to the progress
bar. Then it would sit at 0% and do nothing indefinitely. Last week,
we upgraded to 1.4.0.6, and now the progress bar moves a little bit, but
then it stalls out again. Our IT department tells me that Evergreen is
showing an error related to "arn_value." Has anyone else experienced
this problem? If so, what did you do to fix it?

Thanks,

Chris

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] ***SPAM*** Re: Importing holdings using MARC importer/exporter

2009-11-24 Thread Jason Stephenson

Quoting Francene Lewis :

We're a new Evergreen site working on coming up in a couple of weeks
and I'm trying to understand how to import holdings information. We
use OCLC Connexion with the WorldCat cataloging partners program and
in the past have had our vendor create holdings information for us
in the 949 field. I understand that Evergreen uses the 999 field
and have found the following subfield definitions in the
documentation.

999
m - owning library
l - location
a - call number
t - circulation modifier
i - barcode
p - price
k - status
c - copy

1. Do these fields have to follow this formation or is there another
pattern that must be followed (alphabetical?)?

They should be able to be in there in any order, though most MARC
exporters would likely put them in alphabetical order.

For example,
999 |m info |l info |a call number etc.

2. Does each subfield need to be included in the field?

Probably not. There's no standard for the 999 field, so all fields
should be optional. If a field doesn't apply to a given record, then
it could be left out.

3. Does the info need to be input in all caps or as a code?

They will likely need to be codes.

4. Any other information on owning library, location, circulating
library would be most welcome.

Owning library is the library that owns the item. Circulating library
is the library where it is checked out, if it is checked out. Location
is, I believe, the shelving location code from asset.copy_location.

I am sure that Bill, Dan or someone else will correct me if I'm
mistaken on any of the above. :)

My impression has been that many libraries just use the Z39.50 tool
and don't use the Importer/exporter as much. For our workflow,
however, I really like to batch as much as possible if we can get it
to work.

Thanks for the help,
