[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Bib records not indexed - Evergreen 1.6.0.3

2010-09-08 Thread Linda Jansova

Hi,

We have (in Evergreen 1.6.0.3) successfully downloaded (via Z39.50) a
number of bibliographic records from Czech libraries -- especially from
the National Library of the Czech Republic, from the Librarianship
Institute Library and from the Union Catalog of the Czech Republic.

However, we have come accross a strange problem -- some of the
downloaded records do not get properly indexed in Evergreen and so using
keywords to find them in the catalog does not work (even in case
holdings are already attached). We have only managed to find the records
using the TCN search.

The records in question have been downloaded using the following Z39.50
settings in Evergreen:

NKC
aleph.nkp.cz
9991
NKC-UTF
FI

usmarc

10036
46

10186

All of these are used without usernames and passwords.

The TCNs of the problematic records are the following (the records can
be downloaded using the Accession # or TCN (in case local catalog is
included in the targets to be searched) search box):

nkc20061687667
spoj008315
KN314800416268
nkc20051627559

cpk20070063851
cpk20050058496
zpk20060061459
cpk20031173817

It seems that the use of letters such as "Ú" or "Č" at the beginning of
fields such as 100 a or 710 a may cause the problem (although it is
merely an assumption of ours).

Is there any way how this complication can be overcome and the records
get indexed properly?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Holds Aging

2010-09-08 Thread Hardy, Elaine
PINES libraries use age protection for print materials and are happy with it.
Any materials new to a library are given the 3 or 6 month protection status to
keep their new materials in the branch (3 months) and system (6 months). Not
all libraries need to use the 3 months protection status. It is generally used
by multi-county systems where purchasing is handled by the individual county or
branch. This keeps the new item in the branch that purchased it for 3 months,
then it goes to the system for 6 months then allows holds across PINES after
the 6 month mark.

It is up to the library whether or not to assign the 6 month status to an
individual item. The State Library does not use it at all and most libraries
don't use it on replacement copies. Some use it for older titles new to the
library and some do not.

While staff is relatively happy with age protection, many PINES patrons are
not. They of course want to have immediate access to new materials that their
system has not purchased.

Since the PINES consortium does not allow holds on AV materials outside the
home system of the patron, libraries typically only use the age protection on
print materials. However, some libraries may use the 3 month protection to keep
AV in the purchasing branch or county before it is circulated to the other
system libraries.

Hello,

We are a large consortium and considering using the Holds Aging for our holds.
If you use Holds Aging , can you tell me about your experience? Do you use it
for all new material or just specific formats? Are staff and patrons happy with
the process? Do you use the 3 month setting for filling holds within your
library first?

Thanks.

Incidentally, you can have settings here other than 3-month and
6-month (and also control how far-reaching they are--system, branch,
etc), but these options are global across all libraries.

Hi Joan,

In our consortium of 72 libraries (live), libraries can place 6-month age
protection on their new items. Some choose to use it just for the popular
materials, but not things like nonfiction. That's up to library. Both library
staff and patrons are happy with this arrangement, since the materials stay
with the home library's patrons for that timeframe.

Let me know if you have more questions on this.

Alright, I think we have enough warm bodies for now, thanks folks!

Amy, I tried sending you an email from gmail but your mail server
rejected it, but you should have received a copy anyway from the
feedback list. Let me know if not.

I'm with Brandon - here's another warm body that cares about Evergreen.
Count me in, too. I may not be able to answer everything, but I'd be
willing to help out. And if I can't answer something, I think I'd be able
to find someone who could. (And not Jason or Dan - that would sort of
defeat the purpose.)

So you can add me to that feedback email if you're looking for more
volunteers.
