[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Holds Queue

2010-10-01 Thread James Wagner
Many times, when patrons put holds on items, they want to know where
they are in the Holds Queue. In Staff Client we can go to View Holds to
see where they are on the list. Is there some way for patrons to see
what position they are in the Holds Queue from their account in the
OPAC?

In EG 2.0 (currently in alpha testing), there is a Queue Position
column for various holds lists in the staff client. It's not in the
default skin for the OPAC, though it probably wouldn't be difficult to
add.

However, unless the Holds: FIFO setting is in effect (where FIFO
stands for First-In, First-Out), the Queue Position is a bit of a
fiction (an estimate), since there can be effectively multiple hold
queues, where holds with a given pickup lib get dibs on items found at
or coming into that pickup lib. There's also a Top of Queue (or
Cut-In-Line) field on holds, which if set to true, gives such holds
priority over its peers (effectively making yet another queue). Staff
can also directly modify the Request Date on a hold, which effectively
re-orders the holds queue.

Without FIFO, the answer to the question Am I next in line? isn't
straightforward, and even then, it can be affected by staff.

 Hi Deanna,

My best guess is that maybe the order of the 020 fields makes a
difference on how the book cover appears. We've encountered this
problem before on our system where the first 020 field is used to
generate a book jacket but it might be an incorrect one. All subsequent
ones are ignored it seems.

If you swap the 020 fields used in your example, that should correct the
problem.

[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] ***SPAM*** Re: Using Evergreen in a Small Specialist Library

2010-10-01 Thread Yamil Suarez

One of the issues that we would have is about putting the individual
titles
of pieces of music within a collection of tunes into a searchable
field in
the system, to create an index of tunes - the same would also be
required in
terms of our audio collection, as one of our key requirements is
that users
would want to listen to different performances of the same piece,
and as we
are starting from scratch it would be very useful to have that
capacity.

James,

I am in a similar situation, I work for a large music college in the
US, called Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Our
students definitely benefit from listening to different performances
of the same piece. Several years ago we were able to add song title
indexing with authority control to our current ILS by using a local
field (Bib tag 945) and a linked authority record. Now we would like
to index our song titles in our existing AV and musical score
collections in Evergreen. In addition, we would like to have our song
title auth records authority controlled.

I am not an expert in Evergreen nor do I have an MLS, so please all of
you that know so much more than me about Evergreen on this list please
correct me. I believe that it is relatively easy in Evergreen to set
up keyword indexing on a custom field. So if for example, your bib
records are using a repeatable local field to list individual song
titles, Evergreen can relatively easily index that data and allow you
to perform keyword searches on it.

One potential difference in my situation, is that we would like to
also have our linked song title auth records authority controlled, but
currently Evergreen for the most part only provides authority control
to the standard author, subject, and series auth records. We are now
considering contracting ESI to develop song title indexing with
authority control in Evergreen 2.0 to our specifications. In addition
we are considering contracting ESI to develop song title alphabetical
browse searching features within the Evergreen 2.0 OPAC, which is an
key goal since there is currently no support for any alphabetical
browse searching in the OAPC. Though I have confirmed from ESI’s Mike
Rylander that Evergreen does have “mechanisms for building A-Z
listings, but they are not integrated into the OPAC and are focused
instead on some specific staff workflows.”

Let me know if you want more information on our plans for indexing
song titles in Evergreen, our old set up, or if you just want some
ideas of what approach to take for indexing your song title data in
your collection.

Good luck,
Yamil

It wasn't. Apparently one of the catalogers either typed in the wrong
ISBN or else used a copy record with incorrect information.

Taking the ISBN from your MARC record and dropping it into Google shows
a ton of hits for The Runaway Mummy. Are you sure the ISBN in your
MARC record is correct?
