Re: [Openfontlibrary] StixFonts license update
STIX made this change after some communication with me, because the previous version was clearly nonfree and Barbara Beeton(*) persevered in getting them to review it. We urged them to use the OFL (or any existing free license, for that matter), but they chose not to. I don't know why not. Well, it seems like they listened to recommendations from you and Barbara (and probably other reviewers and beta testers in the community): http://www.stixfonts.org/user_license.html http://www.stixfonts.org/STIXfaq.html The announcement dates back a few months now but IMHO it's great news for this rich set of scientific and mathematical Unicode fonts to be planned for release under the OFL :-) Best, Karl (*) For those who don't know her: Barbara is a very long-time member of the TeX and typographic communities, and one of the hardest workers on the STIX project. -- Nicolas Spalinger http://scripts.sil.org http://pkg-fonts.alioth.debian.org/ https://launchpad.net/people/fonts signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Openfontlibrary mailing list Openfontlibrary@lists.freedesktop.org http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/openfontlibrary

That still doesn't make the fonts available :) Yep, but looks like it's coming. Given the size of the project, I think the delay is still fairly reasonable. In the meantime, if you haven't seen it, there was a nice presentation of the Stix project at TUG 2007: http://www.river-valley.tv/conferences/tug2007/media/Barbara_Beeton/ (Along with a bunch of other brilliants presentations, thanks for all the TUG work, Karl et al!) here: http://olegueret.googlepages.com/stixfonts-ttf This is the 0.9 beta version. And it's promising. AFAICT they're taking into account the feedback for the planned final version. There's also work going on with making these fonts useful in TeX environments (pre-XeTeX/PdfTeX I assume). -- Nicolas Spalinger http://scripts.sil.org http://pkg-fonts.alioth.debian.org/ https://launchpad.net/people/fonts signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ Openfontlibrary mailing list Openfontlibrary@lists.freedesktop.org http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/openfontlibrary

Re: [Openfontlibrary] StixFonts license update
What are your thoughts on this? Are you hopeful to interface these with OFLB, or you have other thoughts? I'm not sure on relicensing these fonts under OFL license...I don't see a clause on this in the contract... The fonts certainly cannot be relicensed. However, in my view the new version is a free license (though not compatible with anything else).
