[OpenIndiana-discuss] 2018.04 lsof -i flag issue

2018-10-22 Thread kls
Hi,

this is very strange:
Since the upgrade to 2018.04, the -i flag of lsof no longer works: [lsof -i:
empty output]
If I go back to 2017.10, it will work again.
On several systems.
does anyone know the problem?
pkg: /system/storage/lsof@4.89-2018.0.0.0: on all OI versions

issue is not KPTI-related: Tested both KPTI enabled & disabled under 2018.04

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Upgraded to VirtualBox 5.2.20

I know it bothers some of you guys, that VirtualBox does not work on
OpenIndiana anymore, but please take into account that VirtualBox is
meant for Oracle Solaris 11 and when it worked on illumos it was just by
an accident. The more illumos diverges from Solaris heritage (and
mitigating Intel bugs in "helped" here a lot), the worst for VirtualBox
on illumos.

Those who can, please, don't hold your breath and consider migrating to
illumos KVM. This is in many respects saner, safer, and more supportable
solution moving forward.

As aside I also managed to get ESXi 6.5u2 (the last supported release
for my CPUs) running within VirtualBox 5.2.20 as a VM, a 300GB IDE
drive, 4 cpus and 4 Intel 82543GC (Pro/1000 T) interfaces. While the
Intel 82545EM where identified correctly, no traffic was transferred.

I tested latest OI on both VirtualBox 5.2.18 and ESXi 6.5, and the
default Intel NIC and the default ESXi one, respectively, worked fine.
Too much layers of virtualization I am afraid :).

[OpenIndiana-discuss] [HEADS-UP] VLC upgrades and cache regeneration.

2018-10-22 Thread Aurélien Larcher
Hi,
VLC will be first updated to a 64-bit binary then later upgraded to 3.x
In case you encounter problems after upgrade the local plugin cache may
need to be rebuilt.
There is a known issue causing plugins to not load properly due to a
failure in cache regeneration.
If that happens, run:

sudo /usr/lib/amd64/vlc/vlc-cache-gen

Kind regards,

I know about the "vanilla" policy but perhaps we should considerate adding

SmartOS and OmniOS for some time (also in the gcc-next repository).
Otherwise people will not be able to run the images at all on some

Also I can already imagine the headlines on Phoronix "Cannot run

Just for understanding: If people switch off ACPI on boot, they
won't hit the problem ? If so, that workaround for newer hardware
should be mentioned in the release notes (although the Phoronix

[OpenIndiana-discuss] [HEADS-UP] Packages lame and twolame migrated to userland from 2018-10-23.

2018-10-22 Thread Aurélien Larcher
Hi,
since software patents have expired for MP3 packages lame and twolame have
now been migrated to userland.
Therefore, the upgrade to Gstreamer 1.14.4 tonight will get
gst-plugins-good to include support for MP3.
In case you encounter any issue with the update, you should set the
encumbered publisher to non-sticky to allow cross-publisher update:

pfexec pkg set-publisher --non-sticky hipster-encumbered

I think we already produced test images with this patchset some weeks ago.
At least it has been in my branch as soon as Robert opened the review.
It would be easy to add the commits.

Predrag, do you have fontconfig 2.13.1? And by a chance can you check

In my case ~/.dconf was owner by root.

If you find it safe, you can change ownership of those files to the expected
user. Then please re-try that BE.

I don't know about infinite loop, but you'll see libfontconfig
iterating

through all the fonts in all the directories when it thinks its font

This is strange, why in the world should the settings-daemon

I don't know about infinite loop, but you'll see libfontconfig iterating
through all the fonts in all the directories when it thinks its font
caches are out of date.   On Solarish systems, we have an SMF service
svc:/application/font/fc-cache to ensure the caches are up-to-date at
system boot and when IPS packages with fonts are installed, so it would
be good to check that's running and not reporting any errors in the SMF
logs for it.

Hi Alan,

checked: service fc-cache was up and running. Restarted, but nothing has
changed.

There are no errors in its log file...

With best regards.
