Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] OI Foundation
I leave where to spend the funds if any to the developers who have more experience. What has to be decided first is who will put their names 'in the hat'. I can create an entity with one or two people but I think at least 3-4 or more would be a better number to start with. at least one or two should really have deeper Solaris experience. I understand some coding, but I am more of a systems person. I think if there is to be a future for Solaris there will have to be some type of organization behind us. Similar to FREEBSD I think. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] OI Foundation
We can roll illumos into the foundation; we can keep the books ourselves, just have to pay a cpa to sign off on it if that is desired. I would do the tax preparation myself unless a large amount of money was involved. I would only do this if the finances were completely transparent and everything was posted on the Internet. The main point here should be to use donations strictly for development and not sucking administrative cost which is quite common in the nonprofit world. [OpenIndiana-discuss] OI Foundation
I have been using Solaris since 1999 and was always impressed with its stability. If there is interest in putting together a Foundation or organization for Open Indiana, I will take care of all of the legal aspects concerning its establishment; however there will have to be other interested people willing to place their names on the governing body of such an organization. Anyone interested should contact me through this list or you can use my personal email. The tax deductible aspect is what can actually attract funding and this can be accomplished with a little work. I would much prefer an organization where the people running it are volunteers and all proceeds will go to the maintenance of the OI codebase and related software applications. We can get this going with at least 3-4 individuals; if there is interest I can start putting something together.
