Each read is issued only to a (lets say, "random") disk in the mirror,
unless the read is faulty.

You can check this easily with "zpool iostat -v".

I would actually pay something.

But consider this:

* I can't deploy OpenIndiana without some kind of security updates.

* I have tons of clients evaluating OpenIndiana, being amazed by ZFS
and DTrace, but can't consider seriously since there is no security plan.

An OpenIndiana future goes thru an official OI release, with security
fixes for a while. Those markets are, currently, closed for OI.

About how costly this could be, Red Hat is a huge business. And we
could follow a major Linux release, like Debian or Ubuntu, to track
security notifications/patches. Maybe even a community security
supported version.

In the old days, there was a Spanish OpenSolaris User Group. After

I have been waiting for the last year or two to replace my Solaris 10
machines with OpenIndiana, but I need a security supported release.

I was convinced that we would have such a release in late 2011, but we
are mid-2012 and still waiting :-).

Any progress in this area?. Is this still a pursued idea?. Any
schedule?. Should I forget about this? :-)

Thanks for this stunning effort.

Uhm and how is it done when you don't have a LOG device?. That is,
when the ZILs are in the harddisk?. There moving the disk arm should

That was my starting point.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] DTrace probes in Python 2.7 (and next 3.3)

2011-11-24 Thread Jesus Cea
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all.

I have spend some time trying to integrate DTrace probes in official
Python: Currently I have a patch to python 2.7, and my plan in to
integrate officially in 3.3.

The initial probes were based on previous work from OpenSolaris, and
similar, but currently I have quite a few more probes. Current details
in
<http://hg.jcea.es/cpython-2011/file/b1a39702dfd8/Doc/library/dtrace.rst>

The probes are tested under Solaris 10 x86 and x86-64. I would need
somebody to try on Solaris 10 Sparc (32 and 64 bits), Solaris 11,
OpenIndiana, FreeBSD (seems to need a kernel recompilation to enable
user mode tracing, check Google), Mac (I doubt it works as is), etc.,
any other platform running DTrace. What about SystemTap compatibility?

Details: <http://bugs.python.org/issue13405>

How to check: <http://bugs.python.org/issue13405#msg147706>.

The easier way to get the patch is to clone my repository at
<https://hg.jcea.es/cpython-2011/> (with mercurial) and move to the
branch "dtrace-issue13405_2.7". Keep the clone around if you plan to
try future versions of this patch, including the future 3.3 version.

You can manually apply the patch in
<http://bugs.python.org/file23758/a9f4ae43fd85.diff> to python 2.7.2+
sourcecode. The patch is developed against version 3c3009f63700
(2011-11-14). It might not apply cleanly to 2.7.2 sourcecode (not
checked). I will provide a direct patch to 2.7.3 when available. Maybe
to 2.7.2 if there is demand.

This is still work in progress. I will improve support with your
feedback. I am considering probes to monitor GIL and thinking how to
monitor C function calls from Python in an easy and fast way. Feedback
very welcomed.

Please, if you care about this, test it and provide some feedback :).

PS: Better post feedback in the bug tracker that by personal email :-).

If you are using EFI labels, you must delete both the beginning and
the end of the disk. The EFI label is stored in both places, and the
ZFS uberblocks also.

Read the Oracle/Sun Solaris 10 documentation. They are really good,
although, OI features are not documented there, of course.

I was wondering if Illumos/OpenIndiana is planning something along the
lines. Having to dig in blogs and random tweets is not very

Stopping the 148 seeding, and starting 151a seeding via BitTorrent. I

I am unexperienced with OpenIndiana, but when Solaris boots a new
hardware, you must do a "touch /reconfigure" first, to force a
hardware re-analisis at boot time.

If you already did the hardware change and the system crashes at boot,
boot from a LiveCD, import the "zpool", do the "touch
ROOT_PATH_ZPOOL/reconfigure" and reboot.

Good luck.

This has been actually useful, Gary. Thanks.

Now if only "init 0" could shutdown SMF services in a graceful way... Or
maybe it does (like "init 6"), I am not sure since this machine is
basically "empty", yet.

My main problem here is that my KVM IP is running in the same machine
and that remote power on/off cycle is "requested" and done in a short
but unpredictable time.

So, the usual problem is that I am disconnected from the KVM and, even
if I reconnect fast, the BIOS screen is already gone.

Painful.

Anyway, somebody else already replied the real question. The answer is
"google fastboot openindiana".

I think this is very useful, but I would love to have the explicit
choice (without messing with SMF propertied) between fastboot "init 6"
or "full hardware boot" "init 6".

"init 6" behaviour seems to be hardcoded, I can't influence it via
"/etc/inittab". Maybe I could write a (non trivial?) shell script to
simulate "init 6" with a "reboot -p" at the end... Suggestions?

PS: Or download "init" sourcecode and write the functionality myself,
althought it seems pretty overkill...

Oh, interesting.

Reading the manual, I see:

"""
If service svc:/system/boot-config:default is enabled and
property config/fastreboot_default is set to true, the -f
 option can be omitted.
"""

I guess this affects "reboot" and "init 6".

My next question is... if I disable fast reboot, I can still do it with
"reboot -f" but... can I do a fast reboot with "init 6"?. Conversely, if
I have enabled "fastboot" but I want a full reboot with "init 6", can it
be done? Without modifying the property, that is. Any other command?. I
am interested in the orderly shutdown of services that "init 6" does.

Interesting too the option to boot to concrete GRUB entries...

PS: Doing "init 5" usually shutdown the machine, but with OI 148 it
'halts' the computer, without powering off. I guess it is the same
"fastboot" handling in action, isn't it?.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] "init 6/reboot" reboots the OS but not the hardware

2011-08-04 Thread Jesus Cea
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi, I just upgraded an aged OpenSolaris 2009.6 to OpenIndiana 148 and I
have a silly but annoying issue.

When doing "init 6" or, even, "reboot", the OS shutdowns and reboot
inmediatelly, but the machine not actually reboots.

That is, the system is shutdown and the kernel reboots inmediatelly,
just like would do a "zone reboot", but the machine doesn't powercycle,
doesn't show the BIOS, doesn't show the POST, and, the really annoying
thing in this case, doesn't show the GRUB menu. And this is critical to me.

The machine is in a remote datacenter, but I have KVM access. What can I
do?.

My GRUB entry is: (just in case is something related to the way I launch OI)

[OpenIndiana-discuss] OpenIndiana hosting advocating?

2011-03-24 Thread Jesus Cea
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

When I check around for hosting services (I do it a lot, part of my job)
I always check availability of Solaris like OSs. I must say that the
result is sad.

OVH is the only cheap service that provides OpenSolaris 2009.06 support.
And that OS is getting old fast. Do you know of anything else?

I was wondering if OpenIndiana should have some kind of "advocates" to
try to make easy for hosting services to deploy OI hosted servers on par
with fedora/debian/ubuntu/whatever linux flavour they already do.

I really think this visibility would be a huge PR win, and would help to
increase userbase a lot.

And yes, this would be nice to sync with the OI "stable" release, with
maintenance, security fixes, etc. But I suppose that "advocating" should
be started as soon as possible.

PS: Everytime I see an interesting hosted server with no
Solaris/OpenSolaris option, I always send an email asking for it. No
success so far :).

This seems to be a "bug" in GNU "who" implementation.

Running this in Solaris 10, I get:

Caché flushes are important. The fist step I do when getting a new
computer&disk is to write a small program (like 5 lines long) to write
small (1 byte) data followed by a "fsync". If the number of fsyncs per
second is too high, I know I can't trust the disk.

Python code:

"""
import os, time
syncs = 1
f = open("zz","w")
t = time.time()
for i in xrange(syncs) :
f.write("a")
f.flush()
os.fsync(f)
print "Realizamos %d transacciones por segundo" %(syncs/(time.time()-t))
"""

Using 7200 RPM disks, the right value is around 120 transactions per
second. If the value is far higher, "somebody" is lying to you about
caché flushes.

Finally, OI people published a torrent file for this image. The problem
is... the torrent generated is not very compatible, at least with "old"
BitTorrent clients:

"""
Problem connecting to tracker - ('url error', 'unknown url type', 'udp',
'udp://tracker.openbittorrent.com:80/announce?info_
"""

UDP trackers are an extensión to BT protocol that not all clients
support. Would you possibly generate a "standard" torrent file, like the
other torrents in the webpage?.

Thanks...

PS: No, I can't change my BT client.

Well, it has been ages since the last sendmail remote exploit, but I
personally know quite a few guys rebuilding servers after being
exploited thru Exim (just days -a week?- ago).

OI 148 uses sendmail. The stable release should be minimal change,
security fixes only. Any extra developer will be used to integrate Illumos.

If a 3th party provides a postfix replacement for sendmail, perfect. But
do not delay 148+support for the sake of it.

PS: I personally use postfix too.

I guess the point is not the education side, but the certification in

While I support "SunOS 5.11" naming, I am a bit afraid of compatibility
divergences with the coming Solaris 11, also known as "SunOS 5.11". So
we will have two different systems reporting "SunOS 5.11" that are not
actually the same system.

I don't have any better proposal, though. Maybe considering any
incompatibility with Solaris 11 a "bug to be fixed" could be a good
advice. Time will tell, I guess.

I stop seeding 147. Stats:

oi-dev-147-x86.usb: 56.38GB
oi-dev-147-x86.usb.writable with-dd: 48.35GB
oi-dev-147-x86.iso: 87.80gGB

Seeding 148 now. Thanks.

I don't have enough space in my HD now for all the files, so my download
will be partial until tomorrow, when I clean up things.

PS: When the new dd->usb file is available, let me know to seed it too.

If you call the MD5 link "md5sum", you should call the SHA1 link "sha1sum".

Please, publish the torrent files!.

Also MD5 hashes are a bit weak, would be nice to publish SHA1 hashes,

I have a big issue with OS 147:

If you use zones and delegate datasets to it, if you reboot the zone
from inside the zone ("init 6"), after the zone reboots the zone will
NOT have the delegated datasets available. They simply "vanished".

To recover the datasets, you must reboot the zone from the global zone.

This is pretty awful if you delegate zones to external parties (the case
I am suffering).

I hope this is solved in OI 148.

If the znodes are 512 bytes too, they waste 3584 in a 4KB harddisk. So
adding both you have extra 5632 bytes wasted per file.

Do you use the same blocksize?. Same compression?.

Anyway, I think that ZFS will try to align everything to 4KB, so it is
going to waste space for every on-disk datastructure.

The problem is evident. If you minimal allocation size is 512 bytes, per
file you waste 256bytes.

If your minimal allocation size is 4096 bytes, per file you waste 2048
bytes.

Mean values, of course.

This waste is per file. If you have a lot of small files...

PS: I guess ZNODES waste a lot of space too when using 4096 bytes sectors.

All of this should be send to illumos, not to OpenIndiana.

Something OpenIndiana could do (integration, not development) would be
to integrate TrueCrypt for full disk encryption, independently of ZFS. I
would kill for it.

You don't want that. Read/modify/write overhead would be huge. 128KB is
big enough to provide good random access without wasting too much space
or having a big overhead.

That is something you can change now in the sourcecode. I think it is
only a single line change.

New compressions would be interesting. But I am very worried about ZFS
fragmentation. If Illumos ZFS can not interoperate with Oracle ZFS or
FreeBSD ZFS, we will alienate the FS and the comunity.

I would like to be able to boot from a dataset compressed in GZIP. That
would be a "simple" GRUB change.

Anyway, the right people to request this is Illumos, not OpenIndiana.

Anybody that knows how BitTorrent works would not need this
"confidence", but I agree that MD5 *AND* SHA1 checksums should be
published. They would be needed by the people who download the ISO
images from the central server, and would be used too by the people
using BitTorrent, even if technically they are not needed.

MD5 alone is not safe enough :) :

I can't wait for SHA-3:

There is no DHT (Distributed Hash Table) involved. The torrent file has
a list of SHA1 hashes covering the blocks making the file, so if you
retrieve the torrent file from a trustable source (the OpenIndiana web
site), your BT client can use the SHA1 hashes inside to check the
fragments it is downloading from all over Internet. You don't need to
trust other peers.

You don't neet a MD5 check. The original "torrent" file comes from
OpenIndiana, and it is "safe". You are a seed, like any other BT client.

If you send garbage, the client BT will reject your data, because it
doesn't match the torrent file (that comes from OpenIndiana, a secure
source).

You could mirror the ISOs via BitTorrent, as a way to help out, and to
promote legal uses of the protocol.

So far I have seeded quite a few traffic:

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Help deploying an OpenIndiana buildbot for python?

2010-10-26 Thread Jesus Cea
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi. I am a python core developer and recently we hit some
Solaris/OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana problems.

Some details:

http://bugs.python.org/issue10142

http://bugs.python.org/issue4111

http://bugs.python.org/issue10201

I have a Solaris 10 machine for testing, but we desperately need a
OpenIndiana buildbot to be able to test OI compatibility. I plan to
install a VM with OI soon, but we need something available 24x7 for
testing builds in a continuous way.

I was wondering if somebody here could help. A zone with GCC installed
would be enough. I volunteer to administer it and I compromise to not
use it for anything else.

Somebody can help us?. This (small) investment could benefice Python and
OpenIndiana too (publicity and tier 1 support in Python).

I write this as an individual person, not as a representative of Python
committers.

How can deduplication affect reading performance, beside disordering the
data around the disk?. I don't see the point of accessing the
deduplication table for file reading.

I am interested to know if this kills zone networking in OS/OI too.
First you must disable DAD, and later, launch zones.

I am using shared NIC zones, no crossbow stuff, since this is Solaris 10.

It will kill networking in zones if your disable DAD and THEN you boot
the zones. You can try simply disabling DAD and then rebooting the zones.

I am running Solaris 10 U7, it this has been a complete pain with OVH.

The problem exists too in Solaris 10 U8, tested in a VM. Didn't try U9
yet, not sure about the new license :).

Didn't try with OpenSolaris.

You too?.

I am using Solaris 10, and disabling DAD kill networking in Zones. What
a pain...

I finally wrote a small python script to populate ARP table entries by
hand, instead of going to the network. But I still see APR traffic when
I bring Zones ether interfaces up.

Offtopic, I know... Just venting :).

Some people in the infraestructure mailing list are reporting bad
caching in the CDN, giving away 206 to non-range request. If that is
true, it is VERY bad and a serious bug in the CDN (not in the client!).

I am not an openindiana user yet, so I can not test it directly, but
when using truss, be sure you are monitoring the process and its children.

If the connection is done via HTTP (not encrypted), you could "snoop" it
and check that the request is actually requesting a "range". Then we
could be sure that the "partial reply" is correct, so must be a bug in
the download client.

You could use "find" to detect the files modified in the last X hours,
so maybe you can find the cache/partial file this way.

If you are still not able to isolate the file, give me a STEP BY STEP
procedure to reproduce the problem, and I will try inside a virtual
machine. Remember I am a Solaris 10 user, not OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana,
so I need to know every command I must type.

I guess anybody could reproduce this if they abort abruptly (let's say,
sudden poweroff, with a "sync" just before) a long download and then try
to download again.

I am not an openindiana user yet, but your could use "truss" to find the
files the downloader is trying to open/append to.

You have problems with the downloads that failed for any reason (network
timeout, for instance), and when you retry, your downloader is doing a
partial request but not processing the answer correctly. Bug in the
downloader!.

The files you could download were files that didn't fail during their
first download.

Delete the partial downloads and try again. And file a bug!.

This seems to be a bug in the downloader. You tried to download the
file, but the download failed, giving you a partial file. You tried
again and the downloader is trying to download from the point it was,
but it is not managing correctly the server reply. 206 means "here you
have the partial request you asked for". It is correct.

The obvious solution, pending a patch, is to delete the partially
downloaded file and try again.

206 is the "partial response" answer to a partial request.

For instance, if you have half a file and you want to relaunch the
download starting in the point you left, you use a "partial request" to
request a given range of bytes. The reply to this is a "partial
response" from the server.

I guess something in the downloader is doing partial requests without
understanding the "right" answer. Seems a bug in the downloader, not in
the server.

I know the difference. My question is... why to publish TWO different
versions?. What is the point?.

As I said in my first message, the "non bootable" version seems to be
useful to install in a already created partition in the USB, instead of
overwriting your USB (but then you need an independent boot system
already installed). But I would like to know the "official" reason, or
if I am missing something.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] USB versions explanation?

2010-09-21 Thread Jesus Cea
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I am mirroring the ISO/USB BitTorrents, and I am wondering why there are
two USB versions.

One of the versions make a bootable USB copying with "dd".

The other version is only an image of a root partition. No partition
table, no boot sector, no grub. What is the practical use of it?. Maybe
to copy it inside an already partitioned (big) USB?. In that case, would
be nice to have instructions of how to boot it in this configuration. In
the wiki there is a method described, but it overwrite the USB,
basically being equivalent to the "dd" way.
