Maybe I'm the oddball in the bunch. But I've been running OpenIndiana as my desktop OS on my laptop at work since OI-147 was released two years ago. Why? I don't care about shiny new UI gloss, but I have to have a stable system. What do I mean by that? One that can run stably without rebooting until I decide to install a newer version or switch systems and one that I'm not always having to wade through new non-security related updates just to keep the system secure. This is why I have run Slackware off-and-on for a couple decades. What brought me to OI from Slackware was ZFS. I could completely rave about ZFS, but one thing makes the point. I have to run a corporate Windows VM. Even pared down it craps itself every now and then. Previously this required a lot of pain and getting an approved reload from IT. Now all it requires is 'zfs rollback tank/vms/win-7@however-many-days-ago' and restart the VM. That's Winning! In the meantime I have discovered zones, crossbow and a few other things I absolutely love. I haven't gotten into dtrace yet, but see a lot of potential benefit there as well. All of this said, I'm about to switch to Slackware running ZFS on another machine. Why? I need the newer faster hardware with more cores for my job. There is a lack of support for the wireless and wired NIC's in the newer Dell laptop. I also seem to recall that the install disk would not fully boot on the system. This was the same reason that had me switching on and off of Slackware years ago, lack of hardware support. I know the core Illumos teams doesn't give a damn about DE or laptop support (half of them only run OI in VM's on their MacBook Pros) but I do. Had I the time and Solaris knowledge I would work to get the hardware support into Illumos, I've written a number of Linux network drivers over the years and would like to think I could figure out the superior Solaris internals. I am very sad about this. There is no reason OI could not make a good working desktop. It's been fine for my needs for two years now. I suspect given another 5 years or so we may see such. I just wish it was today. I don't need GNOME 3, KDE 4, Unity or Ubuntu. I do need modern laptop hardware to be supported. By the way I would like to congratulate Nvidia for providing good up-to-date drivers that work on OpenIndiana. The 30x series has been wonderful. Docking and undocking works flawlessly. Heck sometimes suspend works. (Not always the two together though). And yes, I too spend most of my day ssh'd to emacs'd into remote boxes, VMs, zones, chroots, etc. But I still need a DE for sanity's sake. hmm ... IIRC those were supported. I guess this may depend on which
specific chip, can't add anything myself though, I'm afraid. Perhaps

Just to add a data point, this also happens on my Dell E6410 with the
NVIDIA NVS 3100M using the 302.07 beta driver.

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Best way to share files between host and VMs?
Hi list, I'm running oi_151a3 with VirtualBox 4.1.12 and a number of VM's. My VM's include several Linux's of various vintages including an in-house embedded distribution and Windows 7. It would be convenient to be able to share GB of data between my host and the various VM's instead of copying all of that around between the host and VM's. However the performance of NFS mounting something from the host into the VM's is painful. Compiles that should take a couple minutes take over 30 just to ./configure. I am painfully aware of the contention and performance issues related to OpenIndiana, VirtualBox and NFS but have no idea how to resolve them. Something in me screams there has to be a better way. My VM's have two NIC's configured. One is NAT to reach the local network. I can't bridge them. The other is host-only to communicate with the host and occasionally with other VM's. What is the best way to share data between an OI host and Linux/Windows VirtualBox VM's? It did let me undock and redock once, which I'd only seen with the 288(?) driver on a single occasion. So it may be more stable in this respect. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Slow NFS with OI151a host and VirtualBox VM's
I am running an OpenIndiana 151a host that shares files via NFS to my local VirtualBox VM's. It seems to max out around 1MB/s. This is killing the performance of compiles, etc. But due to the amount of source and the lack of disk space on my laptop, it is not realistic to have redundant copies of my source and builds in each VM. The VM's are configured with 2 NIC's. One is NAT'd for Internet access and the other is host-only so that they can communicate between themselves. I am using an entry in the VM's /etc/hosts to automount NFS via the host-only interface and the performance is horrible. After googling, I know there is an issue with network contention when running bridged-mode with VirtualBox VM's and NFS on the same interface and this can be worked around given two NIC's. But, that doesn't seem to be exactly the same as my problem nor does it provide workable solutions for my situation. If anyone has any ideas or a suggestion of a better forum for this question I am open to input. [OpenIndiana-discuss] OI friendly external drive
I am looking for a USB drive that behaves properly with OpenIndiana. Currently I have a 2TB Seagate GoFlex Desk USB 3.0 drive. But it seems to exhibit a problem with spontaneously detaching and reattaching to the host similar to what i saw with some Seagate drives on Linux a couple years ago. Are we sure it's the hardware and not something in the USB driver? My host is USB 2 only. So at the very least I don't think its USB-3 driver specific. Also I am seeing the same on Mac OS X Lion which may be related or not. I do recall Seagate previously having some suspend-wake-up logic that was peculiar to their Windows driver. On Linux the work around was to not disable the drive going to sleep until the proper quirks were entered into the Linux driver. I wasn't sure where to report this, so I thought I'd start here. I got the scare of my life today when I was doing a zfs recv -v -F -d tank stream and got the message: receiving incremental stream of tank/vms@zfs-auto-snap_daily-... into tank/vms@zfs-auto-snap_daily-... cannot receive incremental stream: invalid backup stream This is on OI151a and that particular file system was all of my virtual machine images. After googling and finding a report of this from zfsforlinux that mentioned it had been fixed upstream, I determined it wasn't exactly the same issue. It also reminded me that this had happened before (with 147/8) and I had read the exact same posts back then before figuring out a way around the problem, but hadn't taken the time to report it anywhere. So, what's the issue? If timeslider kicks in while a zfs recv is running. It may create or at least attempt to create a snapshot which interferes with the on-going receive. The solution is to temporarily turn off timeslider. Do your receive and then turn it back on. Now that you're done laughing, should it be considered a bug? Where should this be reported? Yes I had, but I had forgotten to actually bring up the interface. That said I found an online page about ipadm(1m) being the new ifconfig. So, I recreated everything using it: ipadm create-if vboxnet0 ipadm create-addr -T static -a 192.168.56.1/24 vboxnet0/v4static and it works. However, I have to manually enable and bring the interface up after each boot. Is there a way to do this automatically? [OpenIndiana-discuss] Problems with vboxnet0 interface
I am moving some VM's from a Linux host to OpenIndiana 151a. They all have 1 NAT interface and one host-only. My problem is that I cannot connect to them from the host, nor can the client's connect to the host. Running 'dladm show-phys' displays my vboxnet0, but it did not show up in 'ifconfig -a'. After a 'ipadm create-if vboxnet0', it shows up in ifconfig's output and I was able to assign it an IP, but it still cannot communicate with the clients. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Device filled during oi151a image-update
My rpool device became filled during image-update. So, I tried
deleting an old BE to no avail. The system was that full.
So, after using the following in bash to find and delete some personal
files that had no snapshots

error, Device busy. It's not mounted as far as I can tell. Still did
a couple 'beadm unmount oi151-old' commands to be on the safe side.
Still cannot destroy the BE.

I'm getting a timeout when time-slider attempts to start. It then goes into maintenance mode. Here is all that appears in the /var/svc/log/application-time-slider:default.log [ Sep 1 14:53:31 Enabled. ] [ Sep 1 14:53:31 Executing start method (/lib/svc/method/time-slider start). ] [ Sep 1 14:54:31 Method or service exit timed out. [OpenIndiana-discuss] Setting up the recommended build environment errors with oi_147
I left a comment about this on the Setting up the recommended build environment wiki page.[1] According to Rich Lowe a change in caiman removed the Primary Administrator rights from the user that's created during installation.[2] I am relatively new to Solaris-based operating systems. What is the right solution or workaround to this?
