I'll give this a try and see. Hi All, Bruce's suggestions indeed point to this being some interaction specifically with Remmina (v 0.9.99.1 on the clients in question). Using SSVNC on the same client (pulled down from USC on Ubuntu 14.04), or RealVNC Viewer 5.2.0 on a Windows client, I can connect to the same Hipster host as expected without any additional configuration. Disabling encryption in Remmina doesn't change the behaviour. So – not an insurmountable problem at all given alternate VNC clients, time permitting I'll do some further digging. I have not used hipster, but when I was using VNC on 151a7 (Gnome) with "svc:/application/x11/xvnc-inetd:default”, dbus would run wild sometimes, really putting the CPU’s to the test. I never did have time to investigate it. But while you are working with VNC, you might want to keep an eye out for that. ___ openindiana-discuss mailing list openindiana-discuss@openindiana.org http://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss

I wish I could get FreeNX to compile and run on some kind of Illumos build - it seems like I'm the only one who likes it over VNC. :P " 'With the first link, the chain is forged. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] VNC connections to Hipster
Different setup here (oi_151a8 (not hipster), openSUSE clients, had different error message from Remmina before failure ("Selected Security Scheme 18")). vncviewer (part of the "tightvnc" package on the openSUSE client side) works file. GNOME client (vinagre) fails. KDE client (krdc) just shows a dark cyan background. Remmina fails with a popup error message as noted above with mostly default settings, but works if the connection is edited by checking the "Disable encryption" checkbox on the Remmina side. So, some things to try in your situation: 1. try different clients on your Ubuntu box(es) [tightvnc's vncviewer is basic, but if it works that indicates a Remmina issue] 2. try Remmina options, especially related to encryption. 3. check if your install wiped out anything that you used to have on the OI box (e.g. detailed GNOME preferences for desktop sharing (one of the nondescript icons on the top panel) for the user that has the GNOME session open). Hi, I have no idea about the real isssue, but my debugging would start with a sniffer with packet output (tcpdump verbose, ngrep, etc.) of your two cases. As far as random guesswork goes, you might have 'plaintext' communications flowing where at least one of the sides expects (or agreed) to encrypted comms (e.g. like when you poke HTTP requests at pure HTTPS server handlers or vice-versa)? Alternately, the two might have incompatible crypto settings (i.e. recent SSH (may be your tunnel implementation) versions deprecated insecure ciphers and disabled them by default, while somewhat older clients did not have newer ciphers - hence no feature overlap, negotiations fail... logs and/or higher ssh client or server verbosity might help test that.
