yes, I wouldn't buy a motherboard (in the near future) that didn't have usb2
ports on the IO Panel...I just presumed any blue USB ports wouldn't work...

this is good to hear.

The sale I (thought I) saw, was just a typo, so I'm not going down this path
anytime soon, and my new video card seems to have resolved most of the issues
Sol 11.3 was presenting me anyway...I look forward to watching progress in
Illumos and OI in the future.

You will likely be very unhappy if the BIOS does not support using
USB3 ports in a USB2 emulation mode. Without this you can not use
keyboard/mouse or boot OI from a USB stick or USB DVD drive.

Another limitation I have heard about is that Illumos expects
DMA/mappings to be within the first 4GB of address space and some
BIOS do not arrange for this any more.

The Illumos limitations are becomming more significant over time.

I have much more confidence that Illumos will support UEFI boot in a
reasonable time-frame than it will support USB3 since someone has been
actively working on a new boot-loader.

I searched and see only on some links originated form the poster, maybe.
No one ever called Openindiana "OiOS", that I have seen since now.
That's maybe someone's personal idea but no it never was OI's.

I also found a project called Oios not having to do anything with
Openindiana, e.g. OI. (SLA guarantee scheduler)

I am pretty content with OI/oi as shortcut for Openindiana.

Hardware compatibility questions -It maybe worth reevaluationing the
relationship between HCL database and the Device Driver Utility
submission mechanisum. A self serve HCL is a very useful tool OiOS.

I don't need USB3* right now. Nor U.2, or M.2 if they're not up. I
would like to use the i3's HD530 to drive one of adafruit.com's 800x480
touch screen's. An X server in portrait mode on a display that has only
1 mode and might not auto-negotiate well: so decent video support would
be nice. But I can live without that as long as I can install and use a
serial console, even if it takes some additional simple video card.

I don't need audio (it's home heavy-NAS server), nor Thunderbolt at the
moment. I see both network adapters, I219-LM and I handful of entries
for I210, hoping one is -AT. I see my LSI SAS2308, but not the Marvell
88SE9215, but there are other options, especially if all 6 on-board SATA
ports work.

Any idea about the Mellanox ConnectX-2 I see ConnectX. Not a show stopper.

so - does anyone know if OI boots on an ASUS Z170? I found a Nov 2015
article about UFEI on an ASUS Z170-A, it looks as though CSM was enabled
and legacy options were the default. Can anyone confirm with recent BIOS?

In regard to: [OpenIndiana-discuss] ASUS Z170-WS, Joe Reid said (at 5:57pm...:

I was thinking of migrating from Solaris to OI and was wondering if anyone
knew of the ASUS Z170-WS mobo works? What's the current state of Skylake and
the Z170 chipset?

What's your timeline for doing this?

I ask, because I'm doing a build for Windows using a relative of that
board, and I could try OI hipster on it just to see what works, before
I do the actual install of Windows.

It will probably be a few weeks before I'm in a position to try it,
though.

Without even testing it, I know that the USB3 or 3.1 support won't work,
since Illumos doesn't support USB 3.

I also can't remember if the ASUS Z170 boards are UEFI only; based on a
recent comment (I think from Alexander), Illumos doesn't support UEFI
boot. That could be a show-stopper.

I'll be certain to update the HCL on the OpenIndiana wiki when I have the
board and can test it, but as I said, that will be several weeks yet.

There is a list of Linux compatibility of ASUS mother boards :

https://www.asus.com/Static_WebPage/OS-Compatibility/
https://www.asus.com/websites/global/aboutASUS/OS/Linux1604.pdf

Selection a model from this list may be useful , because , at least they
are known that they can work in a Unix compatible OS tested by the
manufacturer .
