Hi Martin!

These screens look very nice indeed!! Looking forward to trying out
your distribution on my E4500. :-)

However, I prefer quality. So if we need to wait a few days more until
everything is finished, that is fine with me.

Hi Volker,

glad to see your friendly feedback, once again.
As of quality: The iso is kept unchanged for 2 weeks. As nobody from
either OI or Illumos has _ever_ offered me any upload link (did I
overlook sth?), I once again asked Al Hopper for help - and: Of course
he does more than I imagined to get the zone running.
He deserves a HUGE place in the Credits section ...
Since then I tested it on all 23 sun4u and sun4v systems I own, plus
on every frame buffer / system combination.
(most my systems have at least 2, but up to 6 fb's).

During the old days of Xorg based FOX, as little as 3% of these
combinations would work, and if at all, then only unstable.

Now with openXsun (thanks again to Alan Coopersmith) plus with my
patches (that's why it took over a month)
... EVERY combination just works!

And that's so good, it is unbelievable to myself, everytime I
experience this )))

It is damn annoying, that the yt video was too large.
It is the first video that I uploaded since 2008 and I had thought,
the 10MB restriction has gone.
Not so?

I convert my videos in VirtualBox on a 2.4GHz DualCore Celeron running Solaris.
It takes quite long to convert this stuff and upload it.

Till tomorrow (with the video).
Hopefully I get the page ready until Saturday, enabling you to test it
on the weekend.
If somebody wants it really urgently: Please contact Al Hopper.
2 weeks ago I uploaded the iso to his Amazon cloud that he set up for me.

I see no reason, why your E4500 shouldn't work.
But your testing is awaited.

I think this was more a communications problem. For example, it was not
clear to me that you were *waiting* for someone to give you a link.
I myself have a server that I could park the ISO image on. However,
I cannot offer it for public distribution on a permanent basis.

So, please clarify what the current situation is, and what kind of help
you need. Does renaming it to Martux mean you do not want your ISO
to be distributed by OpenIndiana people?

Surely someone could host your ISO on one of these sites:

  http://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/Mirrors

Have you mailed oi-infra@ (CC'ed above)?

About videos: To be honest, I do not care much for videos, I want the
real thing! :-)

Hi, no, why should I care?
I have offered to create everything completely under their name.
Maybe they could have contacted me ... ???
I mean: THE LEADER(S), rather than interested users.
Their leader didn't even warn me in advance, that he was going to resign.
Nobody of the leaders contacted me.

 But it doesn't matter.
Actually I feel better with the dual naming.
As it is - at least at this point - just a flavour of MartUX.
Just like the Blastwave edition that I created way back in 2006 for x86:
 http://martux.org/RELEASES/x86_and_x64/DVD/

The few things that I used from openindiana are more or less identical
to Sun/Oracle upstream (with little modification).
The most valuable thing that I actually used from oi was their
 documentation about IPS!
However, this LiveDVD doesn't even contain any IPS data.

The best thing of that DVD is openXsun with my new patches.
I wanted to push everything into their gates, later.

But as I said: If you build a house and you spent all your hours and
$$$ on it, would you want to donate it to strangers on the first day?

I have missed a lot in my life, because of these damn SPARC boxes all
over the place, in my small apartment.
And I never earned a penny with them.
I hope that it can be understood, that I want to keep at least the
 name MartUX alive.

Redistribution is of course ABSOLUTELY ENCOURAGED and APPRECIATED.
And the openXsun src will also be published.
But rather than simply merging it into OI (where it gets lost), it
shall get its own external home.
In order for it to survive, if somebody resigns because he suddenly
thinks, Linux is faster and better.
Or if somebody else wants a new reference distro.
This sadly reminds me of the 2007 horror.
Belenix would have earned to be the reference distro! Instead Sun has
taken all their ideas, added a few bad ideas to them and re-branded
 the mix as indIANa ...

 Forgive me these critical words.
But I have spent half of my life (and $$$) for SPARC-gfx.
And somehow I struggle to survive, because I never had time to learn
how one would earn $$$ if one had time.
Because the Xorg (plus enhancing libpciinfo, libdevinfo) drivers
testing was an inbelievable time killer.

If somebody can give me sftp access I can upload the iso itself INSTANTLY.
You can freely re-distribute it wherever you like.

I'm back online in about 5 hours.
 Then the upload can start.
Will then take about 11 hours (from my DSL link).

This coexistance ought to be doable. I have a (x86_64) server
initially installed as OpenSolaris SXCE builds in the nineties,
currently at snv_117, and I've just made a BE rootfs for OI in
the common root pool (of an old ZFS version), and copied over
the files from LiveCD with some manual work to turn this into
a working system, as I detailed in the OI wiki:
http://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/Advanced+-+Manual+installation+of+OpenIndiana+from+LiveCD+media

On this particular box I intended to complete the migration of
the OS from SXCE to OI, so I had some fun importing and merging
the /dev, /devices and many /etc/* components so that the final
environment (networking setup with CrossBow nets, HDD numbering)
would seem similar to the old OS, and for the most part this
just worked - but the project is on hold at the moment, because
migrating the local zones was not such a trivial operation as
changing the global zone OS ;)

Still, regarding coexistance of Solaris, SXCE and OI on the
same rpool - this should be possible as long as you can avoid
the installation wizards which wipe disks and make new pools.

Hi Martin,

While I cannot test the fruits of your work myself (I don't have a
graphical SPARC workstation), I'm sure at least the project hosting can
be taken to OI's hosting provider, so that you don't have to burden your
home connection with uploads of gigabytes worth of data. The OI
community also has plenty of hosting options should you need them (if
you want my help, contact me via private e-mail, I have quite a few
personal hosting resources I could throw on this).

One more thing: anything above gzip -6 is placebo. Please see

quick reference. I recommend either gzip -3 or switch to something
faster (if you don't mind some wasted bits).

Sašo: Thank you.
Hosting help will be very good in every case.
I don't know if you are subscribed to the Illumos devel list.
Garrett proposed, that OpenIndiana should no longer be Illumos'
reference distro.
That's what I meant. I finally found some appetite on Indiana, and now
it gets dropped?
I just think we folks will prevent that from happening :)

I know, But on everything starting at 1GHz it is not that bad.
The reason was: Of course I'm aware of the smaller compression ratios.
But then DualLayer would be a requirement.
If you like and if time allows, I can offer two versions of that ISO.
One for DualLayer Media (with gzip-5) and the other for usual 4.7 GB
(4.4GB) media.

Here some screenshots from just now.
One of the recent annoying stoppers is or was, that JDS would _almost_
load fully, but then crash itself and therefore cause openXsun to
stop.
Some problem with the gnome-keyring daemon somehow not willing to
communicate with dbus, although dbus is running fine, even svcs says
that!

Now I took 10 versions of solaris.zlib from a week ago and tried to
nfs-mount it over /usr the the booted LiveDVD's ramdisk. And after
some hours I found now one version, that works. But now Firefox loads,
but you cannot enter any URL.
And another problem: If I simply take a week-old version of
solaris.zlib (/usr), then this removes the other workarounds from
/usr, that I put in place durin the week.
And creating a new 10GB solaris and gzip-9 compress it to 3GB takes 6
