Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] anyone home?

2010-12-17 Thread Lou Picciano
Jesus,

Wow, now that's interesting on another level - this sounds like something I ran
into months ago, using openSolaris, as I recall. Never really got a firm handle
on what was happening; you may have explained it.

As we will be very ZFS and zone-intensive - and will certainly be delegating
datasets, this is something I should look into.

Thanks for that, Lou Picciano

I have a big issue with OS 147:

If you use zones and delegate datasets to it, if you reboot the zone
from inside the zone ("init 6"), after the zone reboots the zone will
NOT have the delegated datasets available. They simply "vanished".

To recover the datasets, you must reboot the zone from the global zone.

This is pretty awful if you delegate zones to external parties (the case
I am suffering).

I hope this is solved in OI 148.

Let me clarify that i made a calculation where I compared Oracle solaris with
MS server2008 and with my basic setup (running mysql and webservers in
different zones/VM's) the Oracle licenses are competitive.

oracle does allow you to use solaris on non-oracle hardware. they do have

far its passed all the tests I've thrown at it. Though obviously being such
a new distribution (even with the Solaris history) its something that I'm
going to have to stay on top of.

I'm going to evaluate 148 when its done and watch security updates like a

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] anyone home?

2010-12-17 Thread Lou Picciano
Roelof,

'Production' - We've actually been trusting it to one section of our production
environment; it's been bulletproof. It is, though, tough to put any useful
quantitative profile on just how hard we're pressing it. We do run lots of
databases, software builds, etc. - rock solid thus far.

Blastwave: No usey. SunFreeware: As a long-time fan of Steve Christensen and
his Good Works, I'm trying to meld two of my loves: OpenIndiana and SunFreeware
(this is like introducing one of your girlfriends to your wife; I'm not quite
sure yet how to do it!) On the one hand, the Oi gang are working hard to stay
current. On the other, We still have lots of need to do custom builds, and
Steve's stuff has saved us lots of time. I'm still working on getting
definitive statements from the Oi crew about how to make it all 'hang
together'. For example, I'm told the /usr/local path is no longer de rigeur.
I'm not yet quite clear myself on what the Rules of The Road are...

Glassfish: Have had it running (believe Oi includes v2?), and have begun to
integrate 3.1 - in abeyance at the moment. Your concerns about the Java
licensing matters are interesting, though; you've created another point of
research - and now, worry - for me!

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] anyone home?

2010-12-17 Thread Deano
I'm close to using OpenIndiana r147 in production (go live next month!), so
far its passed all the tests I've thrown at it. Though obviously being such
a new distribution (even with the Solaris history) its something that I'm
going to have to stay on top of.

I'm going to evaluate 148 when its done and watch security updates like a
hawk. Hopefully soon a general security update process will be in place.

I don't use it for Glassfish or Java, so can't speak for that (ZFS, Node.js
and Nginx are the main apps I'm hosting on OI)

Thanks all for the warm welcoming.
Who is using OpenIndiana in a production environment? Is it risky or just as
good as Solaris used to be?

Has anyone used Glassfish on OpenIndiana? I read some previous posts but it
seems that Oracle created a nice smoke curtain around the licenses.
As far as I know now I can download and install the Opensource Glassfish
3.0.1 and the seperate JDK1.6_023 without problems/additional licenses. But
if I download the bundled Java EE 6 Web Profile SDK then I may only TEST it.

Can I still use blastwave and Sunfreeware?

I just want to know if there is life in the OpenIndiana community and if
OpenIndiana is the right alternative for a lonely Solaris addict.

A quick glance at the mailing lists archives, bug tracker or IRC
channels should give you an indication that the project is active. In
fact, there is a RC out of the oi_148 version of OpenIndiana, which
hopefully will be out in a final version soon.
