Re: [Opensim-dev] HELP - IAR

2010-02-05 Thread Len Brown
As a special added note too...

There are viewers out there now that will allow you to copy ANYTHING out of
Second Life - even attachments while they are being worn by other avatars.
However, Linden Lab is very familiar with these viewers and they check
frequently for them and will automatically and instantly permanently ban you
and will refuse to negotiate for reinstatement.

So please be very cautious if you are considering using hacked viewer that
will let you copy things out of Second Life. If you're banned, then
obviously you have permanently lost access to all of the items in your SL
inventory.

Just a friendly word of caution.

I have one of these viewers and use it within my home opensim server as an
additional means of keeping a backup of my buildings, etc. I have several
thousand dollars invested in Second Life so I don't dare try using the
viewer there. but I personally know people who have used them and got
banned. Nastiness all around.

a few things that can help you with dealing with avatars and clothing

1 http://www.blacksmith3d.com/index.php { editor that can draw on 3d meshes)
2 http://modularsystems.sl/   { alt viewer for grids with some "extra" features}
3 http://www.robinwood.com/Catalog/Technical/SL-Tuts/SLPages/AVUVTemplates.html
{a set of basic templates to help with making things match up}

[Opensim-dev] are we eating our own dog food: when and why do we choose in-world meetings vs email vs IRC

2010-02-05 Thread Dirk Husemann

as part of student project a
small group of students the school of applied psychology from the
university of applied sciences of north western
Switzerland has been looking at how we, the OpenSim community, utilize
the different communication media for collaboration in Open Sim: when
do we use in-world meetings, when do we use email, when do we IRC.

the main goal
of their study is to see which of the available collaboration tools is
best accepted and used by the community and why. this insight will give
them the possibilty to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of the
existing
tools (hopefully) and give feedback on how communication might be
adjusted to best fit the needs of the community.

some of you might have already participated in the survey they've
created, if you did, thank you! in case you have not yet done that but
would be interested, they sure would appreciate your participation.
they ensure complete data privacy and confidentiality regarding the
provided
information.
and, of course, they will make their results public in summarized
form once the project concludes.

so, here's the URL http://ww3.unipark.de/uc/APS09/1684/
in case you are interested!

right now only a limited number of items can be exported for use in an OpenSim
(you could need to use Emerald or another third party viewer to do the export)

just about the only items you can LEGALLY export are going to be full
permission items.

So, I guess we will need a to devise a format, protocol or app named PADL.
What will the acronym stand for?
